ANNUAL MEETING
OF LOCAL 1-363

Courtenay Local 1-363 had a
satisfying turnout for their
annual meeting and nomina-
tions for the election of of-
ficers, in the historic Native
Sons Hall in Courtenay.

The keynote address to the -

\attending members by Re-
gional President Jack Munro,
covered the economic position
of the industry, and outlined
the Union efforts to assist in
opening up of new markets to
ease the problems facing the
lumber producets,

President Munro further
emphasized the need for close
cooperation of Unions involved
in the coming negotiations, and
strongly urged the formation of
a ‘Joint Council of Unions in
Wood’, to meet: the swelling
problems that face all sectors
involved in the forest industry.

The meeting elected a three-
man ballotting committee to
supervise the conduct of
elections and referendum
votes for the ensuing term.
Heading the committee as
chairman is' Bob ‘‘Swede”’
Mellin, assisted by Len Audet
and Jim Work.

The new- Nea iquantee of
Local 1-423 IWA, Kelowna,
built: at a cost of $130,000, is
now completed and occupied.

The building located at 540
Cawston Ave. in Kelowna, is
modern in every detail and was
designed by Kelowna’s leading
architect, John Woodworth.

It is carpeted throughout
with carpets from the Westmill
Carpet. Company which is

under contract to the Local
Union. The main floor has 2,500
square feet of space and in-
cludes the lobby and the 800

-Square foot board room.

_ The officers had the 18 by 16
foot board room table custom
designed to meet the needs of
the Local’s Executive Board
Members.

The second floor has approx-
imately 2,300 square feet of

a 4s. a,

rental space part of which is
taken over by the IWA Re-
gional Evaluation Depart-
ment, and Local 213 of the
IBEW.

The building is fully air-con-
ditioned and has a large paved
parking lot. *

The building owned by the
Local’s Holding Society, is
completely paid for.

Nominated and unopposed
for the position of Regional
Board Member was Lorne
Scott, encumbent Local
President who was also
returned to head the Local
Union by acclamation.

Karl Lidberg won election as
alternate Regional Board
Member, but is opposed by
Jake Epp for the position of
Financial Secretary.~ The

Rudy Vandenbrink with op-
position from veteran con-
tender Nick Chernoff. Sid
Mayes, currently a Vice-
President, is seeking the
position of 2nd Vice with Sy
Pederson contesting. Elected
by acclamation as 3rd Vice is
Jagat Jaswal while the position
of Recording Secretary is
being vied for by Emil Knodel

with Jim Kretz contesting. Bill
Hislop was returned without
opposition to the post of
Warden, while Renato Strussi
was also returned to office in
the spot of Conductor. The
opening for six year Trustee is
contested by veteran encum-
bent Bob Prentice with opposi-
tion from Dale White.

Voting is currently under
way.
