#eq] TORONTO DAILY STAR. Mon. Jan. 4, 1971 | Dateline business “6 Pravda claims US. moneybags control Canada Sia tea FREE ANGELA DAVIS! A call for world-wide de- mands to win the freedom of Angela Davis, now threat- ened with a frame-up trial and possible execution, has been made by leaders of the Communist Party of the USA. In a statement issued last week in New York, Henry Winston, national chairman and Gus Hall, general sec- oe of the CPUSA declar- “The Supreme Court through Justice Harlan has now joined the Nixon- Rocketeller-Reagan racist, anti-Communist conspiracy to steamroller, in rocket speed, Angela Davis to a heinous frame-up trial with a possible death sentence. “Although a year or more is the usual time for an extra- dition case to proceed through the courts, the Angela Davis case has gone through eight legal battles in the system of hanging judges within seven weeks. Not one judge has had the courage or desire to examine the frame-up evi- dence. Every judge has blindly and shamelessly joined the legal lynch mob. “Serious Constitutional rights, including that of due pro- cess and the presumption of innocence, have been scrap- ped. The torches of racism and bigotry have been carried into the courts by Attorney General Mitchell and J. Edgar Hoover and have added fuel to the steamroller. “This is a throwback to the system of injustice which prevailed a century ago in the fugitive slave period. It is part of the plot announced by Mitchell and Agnew to throw this country so far to the Right that it won't be recog- nized. That is the danger inherent in this blitzkrieg of in- justice and in the mobilization of the courts to do the bid- ding of the ultra-Right, the racists and the bigots. “The people of this country and the world must reverse this course as the case moves to California. The Rosenberg execution cannot and must not happen again. That is why we appeal not only to the people in the United States who manifestly support Angela Davis, but also to the peoples of the world who have a stake in the fight against imperial- ism, neo-colonialsim, and for democracy in the USA. “The whole world has the right to know the facts of the frame-up and, in knowing them, to demand and win the freedom of Angela Davis. That demand must be expressed and will win!” Editor —MAURICE RUSH Published weekly at Ford Bidg., Mezzanine No. 3, 193 E. Hastings St., Vancouver 4, B.C. Phone 685-5288. PACIFIC TRIBUNE—FRIDAY, JANUARY 8, 1971—PAGE 4 ‘Truth vs Trudeau Remember when Trudeau last sum- mer told organized labor it was “screw- ing” the Canadian people? In the lan- guage Canada’s elegant Prime Minister uses when addressing workers, he charged them with responsibility for causing inflation through their fight for higher wages. He lied. The lie has been given him most re- cently by the United States-dominated Organization for Economic Co-opera- tion and Development. Representing monopoly and imperialist interests in 22 countries, the OECD in a year-end statement last week from Paris said exactly what Canadian workers had said all along—that it’s profits and not wages that cause inflation. For, according to the OECD, wage rates in Canada still “lag behind ad- vanees in production and profits by three years.” : But the truth has never deterred Pierre Elliot Trudeau. Along with the crushing of democra- tic rights and civil liberties in 1971, Canadian workers are now threatened with wage curb laws. “Selective wage controls” is the phrase used by Labor Minister Mackasey. The answer of Canadian organized labor in 1971 will be the same firm an- swer it gave in 1970—Canadian work- -ers refuse to allow monopoly to unload on their shoulders the price of its profit-making policies of unemploy- ment and frozen wages. Suffer, little children The price of milk for Ontario con- sumers is to go up by “not less than a cent a quart.” So says the general manager of Bor- den’s, the giant U.S.-owned milk mo- nopoly, commenting on the Jan. 4 an- nouncement by the Ontario Milk Mar- keting Board of an increase in the wholesale price of milk. Of course, like all of us, he read or heard Prime Minister Trudeau’s New. Year’s message to the Canadian people, which concluded with the wish, “In 1971, let us look at the children of Canada; let us help every child live a. high and fulfilling life...” What will Ottawa have to say about this price increase? Zero! In the same way, Trudeau mocks his own words in the same hypocritical New Year’s message when he spoke of preserving in Canadian society the traits of our children — “their basic attitudes of compassion and tolerance and openness.” His announced aim of imposing permanent anti-democratic legislation scoffs at “tolerance and openness.” Just as the milk monopoly companies scoff at “a high and fulfilling life” for children. The Leningrad trial (Partial text of an editorial in the Dec. 29, 1970 issue of the New York Daily World.) The statements of Premier Golda Meir and of the Israeli Knesset, that the 11 hijackers convicted in Leningrad are “innocent,” are refuted by the state- ments of the hijackers in court, and by the statements of Mrs. Meir and the Knesset. The Knesset statement, for example sought to subvert Soviet citizens to “fight’for Zion’s sake,” and to incite “Jewish national awakening” and “yearning to settle in Israel.” Involved in this Tel Aviv enterprise is only a handful of Soviet Jews en= trapped by the Meir-Dayan regime: The millions of Soviet Jews are Soviet patriots, part of the great collective building socialism. They have not been; nor could they be, gulled by the CIA’S: agents in Israel. . The Tel Aviv operation is, in fact, onl facet of the world-wide, anti-Soviet, -anti-socialist enterprise to which U.S# monopoly capital and, especially, its) CIA are dedicated. That is the cause which the Tel Aviv regime serves and through it the 11 hie jackers, whether Jews or non-Jews. | The Israeli regime’s attempt to por tray the hijackers as innocents is espe cially hypocritical. Last March an Is raeli security guard killed a hijacker at Munich in Western Germany; six months -later, two Israeli security guards killed one hijacker, and wound: ed another hijacker and two passengers and a steward aboard a plane whicll was diverted to London. Earlier this year the Israeli government sought 0 have sanctions invoked against any government giving refuge to hijackers: Any attempt to portray the Lenin: grad hijacking plot as somehow differ ent is simply cold war hypocrisy. ; The Soviet government’s vigilanc prevented the hijacking attempt. The possibility of death aboard the plan& had it succeeded in taking off, is cleat Only weeks ago, a stewardess was mul dered aboard a Soviet plane by two hi jackers who forced the plane to lan in Turkey. ; The Leningrad hijackers had weap ons; their intentions were desperaté The guns were not department storé toys or dummy weapons for an attemP at make-believe. They were lethal weapons to be used to take over a Sovie plane whatever the price. Mark Dymshits, one of the two set tenced to death, is reported by the Ne¥ York Times (which has its sources to have said at the trial, “Many of ¥ met only on the last day” before thé hijack attempt. This points clearly to # widespread plot whose direction cam from outside the Soviet Union. It begal in 1969, months before the arrests w June 1970. The operating center w2! undoubtedly Tel Aviv, with the mail plans “Made in USA” and financed ov of the CIA’s $3 billion budget. q The 11 were recruited by Tel ANY and the CIA not to fulfill their allegé yearnings for Israel, but as cannon fod der in the war against the Soviet Unio! and socialism. The true spirit of the Meir-Day# regime is expressed not in its cries 0 injured innocence, but in its milital seizure and refusal to restore the stole Arab lands and, above all, its lickspitt} attitude to the U.S. White House. J has been the most shameless in second ing the murderous aggression in Viel nam. It has applauded the murder ® Vietnamese men, women and childre? so that it could have Washington’s suP port to conquer the Arabs. Its erle about the Leningrad 11 will not cové up its guilt in the theft of Arab land!
