Provincial performance disappointing for all stars — TYLER NOBLE TERRACE’S 13-15 year- old Babe Ruth Baseball all-star team returned from Quesnel disappointed July 25 after a no win, four loss outing at this year’s pro- vincial tournament. The Terrace squad was unlucky during the draw for opponents in the round robin portion of the tourna- ment. Terrace had to face ‘West Kootenay and Prince George, teams which have historically been very strong. Prince George won the tournament when Ter- race hosted them in 2000 while West Kootenay fin- ished third in the same tournament. As well, Terrace faced competitive teams from Powell River and Quesnel. The only team Terrace did not face was Penticton, a team that also didn’t per- form very well in Quesnel. Terrace’s first game Monday, July 22 against West Kootenay saw Ter- race in for trouble right from the start, Terrace bat- ted first and went three up, three down. West Koote- nay solved the Terrace pitching and capitalized on several errors to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Throughout the rest of the contest, Terrace kept the Kootenay squad close but in the end, West Koo- tenay came away with a 12-4 victory. The Terrace players were quick to real- ize the game would have been 5-4 if it weren't for the disastrous first inning and made certain to get off to a better start against the other teams. Terrace returned to the field July 23 for a meeting with Powell River. Scott Vanderlee was solid on the mound for Terrace in the early going, allowing Ter- tace to play with a. small lead, But a base running error in the bottom of the third, and a defensive error in the top of the fourth cosi Terrace in this one. The game ended in a 7-3 deci- sion for Powell River but the match up could easily have gone in Terrace’s fa- vour if not for those errors. Next up was hometeam Quesnel. Solid pitching kept Terrace in the game in the first half. Codey J.a- timer started for Terrace and after three innings, his team was working with a four run lead, But Ter- race’s train de-railed in the fourth and suddenly Ques- nel had a 5«4 lead. Quesnel gained mo- mentum from their fourth inning rally and never looked back. Terrace couldn’t get the offence going again and were doubled by Quesnel, 10-5. Terrace’s final game was apainst Prince George July 25. Prince George, known to be very strong in provincial competition, had some problems with Terrace in the early going. Many key defensive mistakes for Prince George made the game close and exciting. Nevertheless, Terrace jearned in the fifth that the Prince George team was far too difficull | Scoreboard Sonia Moore Running King of the Mountain footrace July 28 1. Wade Balbernie 39:59 Terrace 2. The Prince George Squad pulled away in that inning and went on to take Terrace by a score of 14-7, Inexperience and lack of competition. against teams of similar calibre put Terrace at a disadvant- age in the tournament. The team’s batting also didn’t turn out as well as hoped. Despite the four losses, the 13 and 14 year-olds who took..part. on the team learned a lot from the ex- perience and those players will be key in forming next year’s all-star group.
