A6 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 14, 1996 Teen death spurs probe of services THERE’S A new urgency behind a local committee's task of providing services for troubled families, Struck two years ago fol- lowing the death by alcohol poisoning of a 13-year-old boy, the committee made a number of recommenda- tions. And now it’s reviewing services for families in crisis after similar circumstances took the life of an 18-year- old last month. ‘We want to take another look at the services our members provide, and sce if there’s anything more we can do,” said Kerry Reay, local director of the proba- tion office, There are already a lot of services in Terrace to help families and youths in need, but not everybody has ac- cess to them, she explained. That’s because govern- ment ministries define a family in crisis in a number of different ways, depending on the ministry’s mandate. For example, a family or teen with a healih problem will need different telp than a family with a child who is in trouble with the law. The committee will look at gaps in service, overlaps in service and whether entry paints to the system are too narrowly defined. One option under discus- sion is having government ministries work more close- ly when it comes to troubled families. “We have to look at where we aie getting our best value while still being City inspector turfs build plan for own office BUILDING INSPECTOR Paul Gipps has shot down the city's plan to renovate his own office building. The planned $200,000 renovation of the public works building will still go ahead — but it won’t in- clude an addition to the building. The addition idea wauldn’t have met fire de- partment access require- ments and would have forced the city to install an expensive sprinkler system for the whole building, Gipps told councillors at the city planning commiltee meeting last week. “Jf the building — in- spector’s going to work out of there, it’s got to be done right,” Gipps said. nt*What?-" We ~ can’t ~ give diitselves “i development variance permit?” joked mayor .Jack Talstra. ‘‘T guess Atco trailers are out as well.’’ Located on Graham, the building is referred to as “the old potato shed” in teference to a previous usc, The renovation will in- volve an interior reorganiza- tion, addition of a confer- ence room, new flooring in some offices — improving on the concrete look of much of the building. The estimated cost of the project is $185,000 but the cily has budgeted up to $200,000. The cost has risen from an originally anticipated $150,000, It’s expected to make the overcrowded building both more functional and slightly more presentable when prospeclive developers come to town, ‘We're not building any Taj Mahal down ther," councillor David Hull said ' of the latest cost estimates - ts sod for the project. isin é Gas Lid DIVIDEND NOTICE NOTICE is hereby givan that the Board of Directors af Pacilic Northern Gas Lid, has declared a quarterly div- idend of 24 cants per share on tha issued and outstand- ing CLASS A and CLASS B COMMON SHARES of the Corporation payable on March 22, 1996 to share- holders of record at the close of business on March 8, 1996.
