40 Terrace Review —~ Wednesday, March 19, 1986 Dissatisfaction expressed regarding T.V. programming Open letter fo Andre Bureau, Chairman C.R.T.C. On behalf of the 120 families represented by the Terrace Pro-Life Education Association, I would like to express our dissatisfaction with the three pro-abortion pro- grams aired on the CTV network within the past few months (namely: Cagney & Lacey, abor- tion clinics episode; St. Elsewhere; and most recently on Feb. 17, the TV movie Choices). You will recall that in 1984, the CRTC ruled that TY stations which had shown a paid presen- tation of ‘Assignment: Life” in Saskatchewan were obliged to show, at their own expense, a pro- gram presenting the pro- abortion view. Further, the CRTC required sta- tions to warn that the program ‘‘Assignment: Life’’ is biased, prior to any broadcast. We would request that your Commission now require the following: That all stations hav- ing aired ‘‘Choices’’, “Cagney & Lacey’’ (The Clinic) and ‘‘St. Elsewhere’s’’ abortion episode be obliged to air “The Silent Scream’, ‘Assignment: Life’’, “Conceived in Liberty’’ or ‘‘A Matter of Choice.’’ That the same air time be given as was given the pro-abortion viewpoint. That any further pro- grams having a pro- aborton bias be so label- led at the start of the presentation. Alderman congratulated To the editor, Fred MacDonald is to be congratulated for resigning his aldermanic seat to uphold his democratic principles. Now that he is leaving Terrace he would be in my opinion doublecross- ing his voters if he con- tinued on council. It would be different if he’d been living outside Terrace at the time he was elected. @ N The fact his supporters have let him resign demonstrates they’re confident Terrace has at least one principled, fair- _ minded citizen willing to run in a by-election to replace | him, Democratic-minded tax- payers should not begrudge the by- election’s $5,000 cost. Claudette Sandecki Terrace, B.C. To the editor, I am writing in regards to the current controver- sy that municipal council is facing with respect to . the abortion counselling service. offered at the Terrace Women's Re- source Centre. As a Christian who be- lieves strongly that abor- tion is the unjust taking of an innocent life, I have mixed feelings about the current up- roar, On the one hand, I have solid feelings of respect for a number of local feminists from the Thank you To the People of Terrace On behalf of Basket- ball B.C. and the 186 basketball players, coaches and officials, I would like to express our sincere appreciation for the hospitality, en- thusiasm, and hard work of the citizens of Ter- race, during the B.C.. Winter Games Feb. 27 — March 2. We are indeed grateful for the financial and organizational support of the government of British Columbia. Believe me, we know that the Games could not happen without the government’s backing. But, the people are what make an event mem- orable. Everywhere you turned there was a Ter- race volunteer who was glad to see you and anx- ious to help. Thanks for a great time. John Mills, Assistant Provincial Advisor, Basketball, Vancouver, B.C. Gradually, I have come to recognize more and more the inequalities and injustices women endure in our society. Then too, I take my example from Jesus Christ who went against the power struc- ture of his time by con- sistently treating with love and respect the then unprotected women, children and poor. For those reasons, I recognize that there is a need for a local women’s centre, and generally I support the feminists in their efforts to build a better society. Yet when . it comes to the matter of abortion, I have an obli- gation to speak out for the rights of the unpro- ‘tected, innocent individ- ual — the developing un- born baby. For that reason, I must object to the in- formation used by the Pro-Choice Committee and their supporters as printed in the Terrace Review. The language they used tends, in my opinion, to cloud and obscure the basic reality of abortion counselling; 34-3412 Kalum St. Terrace, B.C. V8G 4T2 Ministry of Human Resources that is, that abortion counselling itself often leads to abortion, which not only. terminates a problem pregnancy, but ends a human life as well, 4 For example, four times in the last week’s coverage of the council meetings, there were references to .abortion counselling as being a matter of the public’s right to ‘‘freedom of in- formation’’. From an- other point of the view, the problem is ‘‘lack of information”: The gen- eral public is sadly misin- formed about the reality of abortion. In fact, a growing number of women are forming self- help groups such as WEBA (Women Exploit- ed by Abortion) and ' feminists “WINONE 2 DID YOU KNOW? cae j many of them say they would not have gone through with their abor- tions had they known the reality of the life they were carrying. Indeed, among the leaders of such groups are feminists- who have had abortions and who now identify abortion as part of the emotional, financial and sexual exploitation | of women. In conclusion, | want to point out that for to equate freedom of information with the freedom to choose death for another _ puts women, in my opin- ion, on the side of the oppressors — a place where they have rarely been before.
