Staff Roles, cont'd, , Family Treatment Village

This double professional identity appears to be conducive to staff

development. The most apparent effect is that treatment becomes more

inventive and unconventional.

.

Treatrnent Philosophy

Relationship patterns are emphasized in treatment, rather than the
client's constellation of symptoms. Therefore » the description "multi~ .
problem family" is not considered a useful one in terms of treatment.
The family is rather seen as subject ts two > types of deficiency;

1. They are poor,

ae

. Q. 2. They lack Security-creating relationships within the > Family
and between the family and the environment,

These deficiencies force the family members into a never-ending” struggle 7
for t thair material and social existence which consumes the resources
they do he /@.. Thus the first thing the Village does is to give the family
a breathing space. It lets them get some distance from their most acute
difficulties . Also > From the first day, construction is begun of a network
of functioning relationships around the family and its members x which

later becomes the most important treatment instrument in continuing

work with the family.
