SBR Li Ee,

the importance of nraner conduct and their responsibilities to
essist the public wherever and whenever they can. The impertance
of keenire rhe public informed of what they sre doire is also
stressed to members and in this regard ve have increase: our

Vateon with sur Ines] pews media. A rift has alwavs existed

betveen the Police and the news media in all areas of the country

and in an effort to cloae this orn ve ere attemptire to keen the

Press more informed of our day-to-day oneration and invectisations.

In turn, ve cre receiving excellent co-operation in regard te publication

of erforcerent Progracnes such c¢ our recent Programme to get unlighted

bicycles off the roads after dark. Through the rews media, ve cen ]
reach far more neosle than throuch personal contcet. In the pest

few rorthe, cur locel newspapers have cerried nurerous articles con-
cerning burzlearies and drugs in the Coquitlam Detachment area. In
fact, it almost Appears that the srea is experiencing « major crime
weve. Certsinly crime is on the increase, however, I do not feel
thet a "crime vevel has occurred. The frequency of articles in the
newspapers is the result of our efforts to inform the news media of
cur problems and successes in policing the community and thus create

@ much more inforred and hopefully concerned and interested public.
They are entitled to know what is going on.

We are also encourszaing members to become involved
locally in sports and clubs. Many of my members ere active nerti-
cipants in local Sports and many more ere involved in ccaching minor
sports. Several other members are involved totally or assisting with
Cub and Scout groups.

Our total Detachment area resyonsibility includes some .
825 school classrooms and, unfortunetely, on an average there are ;
only 153 school dzys in a year. Due to Manpower and our normal
commitments, it is a Physical impossibility to visit every, or in

fact wost: school claesroons in 2 school year, which was our initial
aim. Last fail, at the st

art of the school year, we mailed letters
to every school in our area informing them of our desire to visit
ard talk vith as many school

elesses as noseible upon their recuest.
The reaction to our letter ves excellent vith the result that an
averace of ore talk has been given every school dey since the end of
October at various schools in our Detachrent areas. Talks range fron
Traffic Safety, Drug Education, Radar Ecuirment and Breathalyzer
Creratien tn general "ron sessions" ebeut Jay and rolice function.
The reactiors to this orosremme from school steff eas well as the
