In the pest few rorthe, cur locel newspapers have cerried nurerous articles con- cerning burzlearies and drugs in the Coquitlam Detachment area. In fact, it almost Appears that the srea is experiencing « major crime weve. Certsinly crime is on the increase, however, I do not feel thet a "crime vevel has occurred. The frequency of articles in the newspapers is the result of our efforts to inform the news media of cur problems and successes in policing the community and thus create @ much more inforred and hopefully concerned and interested public. They are entitled to know what is going on. We are also encourszaing members to become involved locally in sports and clubs. Many of my members ere active nerti- cipants in local Sports and many more ere involved in ccaching minor sports. Several other members are involved totally or assisting with Cub and Scout groups. Our total Detachment area resyonsibility includes some . 825 school classrooms and, unfortunetely, on an average there are ; only 153 school dzys in a year. Due to Manpower and our normal commitments, it is a Physical impossibility to visit every, or in fact wost: school claesroons in 2 school year, which was our initial aim. Last fail, at the st art of the school year, we mailed letters to every school in our area informing them of our desire to visit ard talk vith as many school elesses as noseible upon their recuest. The reaction to our letter ves excellent vith the result that an averace of ore talk has been given every school dey since the end of October at various schools in our Detachrent areas. Talks range fron Traffic Safety, Drug Education, Radar Ecuirment and Breathalyzer Creratien tn general "ron sessions" ebeut Jay and rolice function.
