agi ens aaa raens ener re ecm | PREMIER GORDON Campbell brought a mes- sage emphasizing Olympic economic benefits to the regions during a quick swing through the area last “week. Speaking in Terrace and in Smithers, Campbell told invitation-only audi- ences the economic spin- offs of the winning the bid “for the 2010 Winter Olym- pics will pick up the pro- vince’s fortunes. And he called for ideas and suggestions from the regions to make the games a British Columbia project as opposed to one centered in’ Vancouver and Whist- ler. “Each region has a chance to shine," he said. “It will be an exceptional promotional event.” “It’s a- pre-paid promo- tional brand we can take advantage of across the province.” Campbell portrayed cri- tics of the Olympics as primarily partisan objec- tors linked to the NDP - despite evidence doubts are more widespread among people here. - “Most people think the Olympics is a great idea,” former chamber of com- merce president Betty Barton told Campbell. “They're just worried about what we're going to have to give up if we get the bid.” Northwest Loggers As- sociation président John Nester was one of many invitees who emerged from the meeting more in favour of the Olympics, but still harbouring doubts. “My question is like everybody else’s — what do we have to give up to get it?” Nester said. Campbell said he’s confident in the estimates of Olympic costs, citing approval of the auditor- general. ww hie Fe We should be able to’: generate a significant surplus,” he said, ; “Even if we're wrong, if we're 50 per cent off, it’s still $5 billion more into the economy and 110,000 more jobs for a $600 mil- lion investment. That's a pretty good return.” Skeena Liberal MLA Roger Harris sees the Olympics as one huge- showcasing -: commercial British Columbia to the rest of the world. Harris has been taking this message throughout the riding,’ drumming: up support for the multi-bil- lion 2010 Winter Olympics bid. “This is a vehicle and we should not miss this opportunity,” said Harris recently. “You could never put enoligh.money together as @ province or as compa- nies or anything to get the attention of the world like this does.” Harris is quick 'ta note © _that the direct provincial financial price tag is $600 million, which he says isn’t a lot given the years long preparation span. He, as do other Olym- pic backers, say. the fed- eral povernment will pony up more millions and that revenue. from selling TV and other media rights,’ sponsorships and the like will cover the other costs. Is an. opinion shared’ by provincial auditor gen- eral Wayne Streiloff, who was asked to evaluate the games bid. But he did note. that some of the revenue : pro- jects remain to be nailed down and that strict cost control and project man- agement are needed to keep costs in line. Harris said the Olym- pics are one way to pro- ‘mote the province's forest industry which he says has met’ high environmental and stewardship standards, And he rejects the no- tion that environmental groups could -use the Olympics to attack forest standards. "I actually have confi- dence in what we're doing. I actually feel good about Ras Premier, MLA boost . All those who at- tended were presented with bright red scarfs to take home. Campbell was also in Smithers. +. ee it. “| think the people I know in the logging indu- stry, in the mining industry are very good stewards of the land. We can’t be shy about talking about it.” Harris concedes there is nervousness about the fi- nancial implications of the Olympics in the rural areas at a time when the pro- vince is cutting jobs and services. Some people in his ri- ding associalion, he says, think he shouldn't be rais- ing the Olympic flag at all, “This isn't taking money away from anything - at all,” said Harris. “Give me all the bene- © fits to B.C. of not winning the Olympic bid. You know’s it’s a tough ques- tion to come up with some answers.” “He. who nabs this ball and_uses the Olympics — and I use that word quite candidly - uses the Olym- pics to achieve what’s going to work for them will benefit.” ‘“Those who sit back and wait and ask the ques- tion. of what’s it going to do for me - you kriow what, they’re not going to get anything out of it. And the critics will have won,” Harris continues.
