A12 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, November 10, 1993 Shelter IF THE OLD animal shelicr was a dog’s breakfast, ils replacement is the cat’s meow. And it’s not just Terrace animal shelier staff and Jocal residents who feel that way. Kamloops obviously agrees, says animal control officer Frank Bowsher - That city, he explains, is think- ing of using Terrace’s plan as a blueprint for a new shelter it in- tends to build next year. Acouple of other municipalities have also expressed similar inter- est, he adds, and indications are those. altending next year’s by- law enforcement officers conven- tion have the shelter down as a must-see while here. Those touring the facility -dur- ing this Saturday’s official open- ing and open house will quickly sce why it is drawing that kind of altention, i Underfloor piping running through the front portion of each dog enclosure means the animal can curl up on a warm floor. Pull on the handle on the out- side of the cage, and an aluminum door slides up to allow the dogs to get into the outside, common run. Vicious or sick animals are the exception to the above. Their oul- side runs are segregated from the common Tun and each others’. The vicious/sick dog enclosures account for four of the 24 runs and that total is double the old . shelter’s capacity. , But it’s probably the cats who benefit most from the changes. In the bad-old-days, they were crammed into tiny cages which were housed in the same area as the dog runs, a literally hair- raising experience for some. Now, they enjoy much larger cages in a room of their own and will even have a covered, ouldoor “play” area complete with climbing trec. Bowsher says another welcome addition is a wildlife room. This includes a large cage for birds in which a hardwood perching “tree”? will be placed. There are also a number of smaller cages for rodents, cic. Now they could be looked after here and eventually released on their home turf. Bowsher points out the shelter’s human occupants have also gained with the provision of a properly laid out reception arca, a kitchenette for preparing the animals’ food, a separate medical room and a staff shower. Add in a consistent lemperature (‘the old building was cither too hat or too cold’’), a sharp reduc- tion in noise from the back for staff manning the front and a layout which makes cleaning the squirrels and fete Tony DeMelo gets rave reviews enclosures much casier and it’s little wonder he says ‘‘the staff are elaled’’, Bowsher, and the public, have reason to be pleased with another innovation: his own office which he says offers privacy that is ap- preciated by the public. “They are a lot more comfort- able in coming in, and talking over their problem,” he explains. Another plus for the community at large is the animal shower. While it’s main purpose is to al- low slaff to clean their charges, Bowsher says the public will be able to use itas well ata nominal fee. Located on city-owned land ad- jacent to Rotary Park, the 3,000 sq.ft. plus concrete block-metel roof structure came in on budget at $370,000. Given it can be added on to if future demand required, Bowsher says the new shelter should be good for 50-60 years. The project was financed by $250,000 of short-term borrowing with the balance being borrowed from the city’s land acquisition fund. The latter is supposed to be repaid from the sale of the Jand on which the old shelter stands. The shelter is open 1:00 - 5:00 p-m., Monday to Saturday, or phone 635-1457. - RE-ELECT _ MAYOR “Experienced Leadership — for a growing community” aa Rick Slavik KEITH MALL LOCATION. “Cliff Marcil ‘SLUMBER LODGE Terrace, 4702 Lakelse Ave. - ‘Phone 63546302 The Slumber Lodge Dining Room will be until 8:00 pm > “for'a dining experience ~ OPEN SATURDAY & SUNDAY NIGHT SATURDAY “rime Rib of Beef “= Yorkshire Pudding _ Roast Potalo © "Vegetables — Soup or Salad English Trifle ROB SUNDAY wpe oe Hog © Feather oS ~~ Baby Back Ribs. — —. ®& Cornish Hen .
