Orenda adds paper mill to pulp plant plans Orenda Forest Products won’t be making any decisions on.its plans for a pulp mill in the Northwest until an advanced feasibility study is finished. The company expects to have the study by the end of September, 4 public relations rep- resentative said last week. . Orenda holds a 240,000 cubic metre forest licence in the North Kalum. They announced several months ago the intent to build a chemi-pressurized groundwood pulp mill in the Northwest, with Stewart indicated as a prefered location. Estimated: cost of the project was about $150 million. The plan was part of Orenda’s application for 100,000 cubic metres of pulpwood offered by the Ministry of Forests in the North ‘Kalum this spring under Pulpwood ‘Agreement 17. Orenda stated in the application that financing for the pulp mill project would hinge on the company obtaining the additional tenure, although they expressed doubt that it would be necessary to cut the wood. Jim Hogan of Hogan Associates, Orenda’s public affairs agency, said the company is also consider- ‘ing the option of constructing a fine paper mill along with the pulp operation, an addition that would add $290 million to the total cost. Hogan said he’s reluctant to ela- borate further on the company’s plans until the study is submitied. Locations other than Stewart are also being studied, he said.
