‘November of 1945. The vehicle got bogged down along the Northern Transprovinelal Highway.

Northwest would be more than secluded

Skiing includes
hillside picnics

TERRACE — The Pacific
Northwest is well known

to skiers as ‘‘Pacific

Power” country.

Not often do we get that
sought after number 10

powder ... what we do see
a lot of is affectionately
called corn snow, ego
snow or slush. A heavy
snow that is immediately
packed ‘as it hits the
ground, except at higher
. elevations.

Skiing.on corn snow is

like skiing on “millions of |

tiny ball bearings’’, even

the avid beginner will tell

you it makes for easier

~~~ tums. But not all corn
snow is created equal —
‘much of the time you will
only find*it in that brief
-interlude. between morn-
-? "dng hardpack and after-
“noon slush.
= Should you discover a:
day when mother nature is
on your side, skip lunch...
because it'll be a day
you'll remember for a
long time to come.
To many people, spring
skiing is racoon eyes,
hillside picnics, reduced
Tates and no lift lines.
Most of the time, we in
the Pacific Northwest
don’t experience spring
skiing. because the road
becomes washed out and
the golf clubs and termis
raquets are pulled out of
the closet.
So what happens to the
die hard skiers? They
enlist- in some touring
equipment and hike up
mountains ‘“‘to take just
one last run.”’
Before you attempt a
ski tan to impress your
lowland friends remember
a few important points:
wear an open-necked shirt
to avoid a “‘turtleneck’’
tan, also you'll need pro-.
tective sunglasses and
- some sun blocking lotions
... The spring alpine sun is
at a high angle of intensity
and sunburning occurs
easily. .
So if you happen to
strike it lucky in the lot-
tery give me a call and
we'll rent a helicopter with
an avalanche guide of-
‘course and ski to our
hearts cuntent!
