an Dr. Lamb © - By Lawrence E, Lamb, M.D. DEAR DR..LAMB — I'm real upset. My daughter is starting to college, and she is | going te stay at a "co-ed" dormitory, with boys, The boys and the girls will be liv- ing on the same floor. She says ] am ald fashioned, but Dr, Lamb, it doesn’t ‘take much imagination to ess what those kids will be doing. I'm not too old to remember how it was when | went to col- lege. It was hard enough then to control your passions with- out tempting yourself that a hen | was in college and Stayed in a dormitory, ve even had to be home from dates and the dorm locked by 10:30 on week nights. Now, it seems like they are inviting the wolf right Into the house for the night, I’ve tried to raise my daughter to be a decent girl. She has dated while in hi h ’. school, but £ don't think s has gotten involved with sex. Werhave been careful where She goes and who she goes wilh and made sure she kept decent hours, Now, I'm just sure she’ will be living with people who have a free and, easy, attitude about sex and who-knows, she may get pre nant or get some disease. I Just don’t understand why calleges allow things like that to’ occur these days. Dr. Lamb, am I right in worrying about.my daughter? : “DEAR READER - Of. course, you are tight to Worry ’ about your daughter. Every ‘good mother is concerned Hop OES a Ce tried JStvs, lag ares Sena os Po ON. PELE ar Bat WR about her children. Bul, you may "be worrying about ‘the wrong thing. Co-ed dormitories are not “sex-pads,.” Actually, they are based on the idea that men and women are in- dividuals with much more to their personalities than sex alone. ‘ Men in girls’ = “Men and women are goin to have to’get along throug life with eachother in a meaningful society. To do this it is important that they learn to think of each ather as individuals, not just in terms of sex, A recent study by ‘Dr, Elizabeth Reid af Harvard explored the effects of co-ed living in college. She found that.on the whole it was beneficia) to personality de- velopment. She pointed out that the college years are a time to consolidate one's self-image as an individual with per- sonality and gender. On the whole,,Dr. Reid's studies point up what may be one problem of our society, the harmful effects of artiti- cal isalation, in this case isolation of-the sexes. It really is rather sad to think (hat ‘either men or women must isolate themselves from meaningful friendships with one halfof the people in their society, except on asexual level. - Dr. Reid thinks. thal ‘the one-sex dormitory which you experienced in- your college days results in it being much easier for. women to form friendships wilh other women than il is with men. No doubt (he same thing can be said about men living in men's dormitories. The friendships between the girls were more or less automatic u friendships with men were not and required an effort ta develop. This really ‘limited friendships with men to those based on romantic or sexual relationships. When this occurs:after marriage, it is litle wonder that the mar- riage is in irauble. he girls in Dr. Reid's. study living in co-ed dorms soon took friendships with men for granted. In short, they learned to think of men as other human beings with a personality independent of eirg a sexual animal or a source of romantic love. All- of the girls had platonic men friends just as t hey had girl friends, The gir! from the single sex dorm tends to be self-con- scious around men. But the girl in the co-ed dorm learns to know men as friends, and they are as comfortable with their platonic men friends as they are with. their girl ° friends, Sex doesn’t get in the way of being friends.’ Dr. Reid admits that the girls in today's co-ed dorms have. more sex - than’ yesterday's girl from the ane- sex dormitories, but she . points out that it is usually men away fram the. with dorm they live in. There are, however, some romances bet- - ween. hoys and girls in the same dorms. It is not a major roblem. And, with the new reedoms, it is: just possible the girls would more sexual activity anyway, evan if they were from.a one- sex dormitory. The dif- ference would be the lack of development .af casual rela- tionships ar just good friends with men. Dr. Reid does not consider the habits of the , girls as promiscuous. She - says when sex does occur it is usually: with someone very close to them i ina meaningful way. : - Dr. ‘Reid found - that the * girls from co-ed. dorms didn't have the same social sure to date.
