PAGE 6, THE HERALD, Friday, September 23, 1977 ~ Stripped-down WHA will improve quality QUEBEC (CP) — A smaller World Hockey Association promises to make the competition tougher and outstanding individual ‘performances more difficult to achieve this sreason, Real Cloutier of Quebec Nordiques said Wednesday, “I've always said it~by cutting down on the number of teams, the WHA is goin to improve the quality o play greatly,” the 21-year- Nordiques opened training camp in nearby Beauport with 32 players. “There won't be as many 50-g0al scorers in our league this year because of the better balance that there’s going to be.” Last year, when the WHA began the season with 12 clubs, Cloutier scored 66 cals and added 75 assists or 141 points and the WHA scoring championship. The league will have only eight teams this season. : old right winger said as the u “~ may, Headhunter takes’ his first scalp VANCOUVER (CP) Defensive back Larry Uteck might not be qualified for membership __ in The Headhunters, the defensive front four that helped spark British Columbia Lions to their only Canadian Foot- ball League title in 1964. However, Uteck has already taken one scalp— but it belongs to wide receiver Al Charuk, a team- mate who now insists the latest in fall fashion is a wool toque. - “Well, you see, I had a litle to drink . . .,” is the way Charuk is explaining his Kojak coiffure these days. Nobody’s saying exactl what happend but tal around the Lions camp these days is that Uteck won a bet in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. And while some team- mates’. are suggestin Charuk keep his hea shaved until the Lions, leaders in the Western Football Conference, win the Grey Cup, others are somewhat indignant about the whole affair. “Crazy—that's what wide receivers are,” said Jim Young. “‘Now I know why I’m switching to defensive back,”’ For awhile, coach Vic Rapp thought a_ team meeting had been infiltrated omertD The Cahadhan movement ior personal bine ss Fimess. Charuk is wondering how he’d do on the midget wrestling circuit. Jets drop three out of four STOCKHOLM AP- Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association dropped their third game in four starts at an international tournament Thursday, bowing 7-5 to the AIK Club of Stockholm. Bobby Hull scored three ‘oals for the Jets, but it was in vain as the Stockholm team went on topost its fourth successive victory in the tournament. Hull, the 38-year-old veteran new in his 20th season in pra hockey, got one of the biggest cheers, from the near sellout crowd of 8,422. Willy Lindstorm and Dan Labraaten, two of the seven Swedes on the team, scored the other goals for Win- nipeg. The Jets are without a win inthe tournament. With one game left, they are last in the six-team standing. Their only point came in a €- 6 tie agaist a Finnish club last week. “Last year, there were e dozen players who scored 50 goals,” said Cloutier, en- tering his fourth professional campaign. “This year J don’t think more than haif a dozen will make it to 50. ., SEEKS SAME OUTPUT “Actually, what I hope to do is to reach the same output I had last year. If I do that, I think it would ac- tually mean an im- provement. But I know very well that it won't be easy.” Centre Christian Bor deleau said increasec competition will make it especially difficult for the Nordiques to defend the Avco World Trophy championship they won jast May against Winnipeg Jets.
