Oe WSs Sak VER since it was known that he Soviet Premier Nikita Krusch- chev would attend the United Na- tions sessions, there has been a rising cresendo of anti-Soviet cold- war slander and hate let loose. Originating in the Pentagon and fanning out through all the power- ful media of press, TV and radio propaganda, this hate-Russia hys- teria reached unprecedented proportions. Even the oft-repeat- ed suggestion of “assassination” has not been omitted. An editorial in The Province of September 15 entitled “Open Ses- sion in Manhattan . ” takes it for granted. that “There must be hundreds in the New York melt- ing pot who would welcome an op- portunity to draw a bead on men such as Hungary’s Janos Kadar, Cuba’s Fidel Castro or Poland’s Wadyslaw Gomulka . .. ” etc. not- ing also that this urge for “assas- Sination” is “U.S. official reason -.-.to keep the No. 1 Russian alive.” By inuengo and inference The Province merely repeats what other equally ‘reactionary press and TV agencies have been slyly suggesting. U.S. “restrictions” on ice nas of Socialist. and state, which are nothing short of a deliberate insult to the millions of peoples they represent ,are primarily de- signed to fan cold-war hatreds and violence against powerful voices for disarmament and peace. the movements other heads of What these ‘respectable’ provo- cateurs of U.S. imperialism point- edly ignore is that the United Na- tions isn’t the U.S.—at least not yet, despite all the efforts of the Pentagon to make it so. Conse- quently the “restrictions” and other coldwar incitements' to vio- lence against UN delegations op- posed to Yankee war provocations and policies, are in essense at at- tack upon the UN itself and its Charter obligations to all> human- ity. The disturbing and dangerous prelude to the present UN sessions point up one basic need in the struggle for disarmament and peace; not as some have suggested that the UN be moved to more ‘neutral? and friendly territory, but that Yankee imperialism be taught a simple basic lesson by the UN itself; viz, that the United Na- tions is not the United States. Peace vs stocks New York and Toronto Stock Exchanges, a bit jittery in recent weeks because of worsening econ- omic conditions, took a real nose- dive Monday of this week with the opening of the 15th session of the UN Assembly. The arrival in New York of Mr. K. and other heads of great Social- ist states (described as “trouble- makers” by Ike) to wage a deter- mined struggle in the U.N. for disarmament and peace, sent our steck exchanges hurtling down- wards, in the N.Y. Stock Exchange to the tune of $8 billion in one day. To those speculating and profit- eering in war productien, the very idea of peace spells disaster. As the stock exchange barometer heads downwards, we may expect to see an increase of war specu- lators looking for 16-storey win- dows from which to follow the falling barometer. Help, not N the welter of rumor and coun- ter-rumor coming out of the Congo, as dished out by the ‘news’ manufacturers of the monopoly press, one single fact is shaping up; that the imperialist colonial- ists, making the most use they can of the UN to push their plans for- ward, will permit no form of goy- ernment other than a “pro-West- ern” anti-Communist regime to survive. This is already seen in the open interference by UN civil and mili- tary forces in the internal affairs of the Congo Republic; activities not authorized by the Security Council mandate of July 14, which specifically stipulated giving the Lumumba government all assist- ance required to discharge its re- sponsibilities. UN seizures of communication and airport facilities in key Congo areas and denying the use of these to Premier Lumumba, the while making such available to every anti-Lumumba stooge and _ pro- Western “strong man” they could dredge up, makes clear the aim sought; to retain by intrigues bor- dering on civil war, the “right” of western imperialism to hold onto ae hindrance the resources-rich Congo, and fi the material for a so-called “pl Western” government to facilila that objective. Thus the week-end’s UN resd tion to confine “all aid to the @ go through the UN” sounds hat less enough in itself, but obseu in its fine words the foul brea of coldwar anti-communism 4 the continued ruthless exploitall of the Congolese people, if not ¥ der Belgian imperialism, then 4 der similar imperialist robbers ing other flags of “freedom.” Only in this setting can t fiendish howls of glee by coldwar maniacs at the of Soviet diplomats from ville by “strong man” Colonel Jé eph Mobutu be understood. Without getting too statistical it may be said that “under the demo- cratic system” as ‘practiced by CLC-CCF top brass and Mr: Jo- doin, some 24,000 trade unionists in B.C. alone have been “democ- ratically” oozed out of CLC affilia- tion, and their ranks “democratic- ally” raided by CLC authority and approval. It may also be observed that in the “democratic”? conniving, scheming and conspiring to make the trade unions a CCF milch cow and voting machine, a la the ‘‘new party,” that every CLC trade un- ionist, regardless of his political beliefs or color, has the ‘demo- cratic” right to be a_ standard- bearer for the “new party,” pro- viding he or she accepts the CCF dictum (revised Winnipeg edition please) without question or cavil. Such “democracy” staggers the imagination, and it is no wonder Mr. Buck and tens of thousands of others “know nothing” of its in- tricate operations. In this sad state of ignorance, we cordially invite Mr. Jodoin to elucidate in greater detail. Just recently, as a typical ex- ample of Mr. Jodoin’s “democratic system,” some 800 CPR employees were arbitrarily transferred from their parent union to one of Mr. Jodoin’s. choice, without so much as a by-your-leave of the union’s membership. Unaware of CLC’s “democratic System” these CPR workers ap- parently held to the old-fashioned idea that workers should belong to unions of their own choosing. But Mr. Jodoin and ‘his “democ- ratic” raiders said “no” and in- sisted upon imposing a new union upon these workers, with wage reductions and cancellation. of other fringe benefits included. Naturally these CPR workers : went on strike, joined by theif wives and families on the picket line, while the B.C: Federation of Labor and the VLC (aided by CPR injunctions), did their best to eR . force Mr. Jodoin’s “democratic sy tem,” which Mr. Buck: ‘knows’ nothing about.” : For the trade union movement such “democratic systems” are # costly business. In the per-capita building empire on which the CL@ CCF leadership have embarked, the working people are the vie tims, the monopolists the ben® ficiaries. No matter how fancy # lable Mr. Jodoin may tag onto 7 union cannibalism or “raiding, can destroy overnight what. it ha® — taken workingmen and wome? years of effort, sacrifice 3? struggle to build. ; A “democratic system” which has no other end product than U2 ion splitting, division and disruP” tion, makes a mockery of uni0? organization and collective bak gaining, and renders organize” labor impotent against the une? ing attacks of organized monopoly? regardless of whether such atta© are launched on the economic ? political fronts. ane What griped Mr. Jodoin and 2 “democratic system’ was that ™) || — Buck and countless thousands ® || _ others, know too much of its |} structive consequences. . ar September 23, ag 1960—PACIFIC TRIBUNE—P
