#% The public consultation process failed dismally. The report suggests no role for the public, for its municipal representatives nor, indeed, for the Province of British Columbia in decisions affecting the health and safety of BC's coastal communities and coastal environment. It is difficult not to regard the Port of Vancouver's study aS a public relations exercise. This is a harsh conclusion, but we believe it is justified by a detailed reading of the report. Following, please find responses to the Port's study by Call for Inguiry and by Mr. Michael Akey. November 28, 1991. To: The Part of Vancouver From: Call for Inquiry Response te The Port of Vancouver's Tanker Risk Analysis Introduction Thank you for the opportunity to comment on your tanker risk analysis. We apologize for writing to you at the lith hour. lease bear in mind that we only received the full, approximately 700 page report in mid-September, and without staff, we have responded as soon as we could. We also regret that our reading and our comments cannot be more thorough. Nonetheless we welcome the opportunity to see the report and respond to it as a representative public voice. While we do not pretend to speak on behalf of the public, we believe that our voice echoes the public concern. We are. certainly pleased that the Port has undertaken this study. We are, in many cases, whole-heartedly supportive of the recommendations. . Unfortunately, our limited resources. force us to address only the areas where we have criticism or concern ~~ thereby neglecting other areas where we could, and perhaps should, express support for the study. This does not negate support for many recommendations and our hope that they will be implemented. The critical tone in some of the following remarks does not stem from a desire to "stop all tanker traffic", an accusation we have heard levelled at public interest groups who address this issue. In fact we are motivated by genuine concern fer the health of BC's coastal environment, a value we hope we share with the Port of Vancouver. We would be. happy to work with the Port. to bring about policies and practices that maintain 4 safe and healthy coastal environment. — | ITEM | PAGE
