Dear Mayor Traboulay,

aie Last February, over 300 people attended = an important
bei conference in Nanaimo, British Columbia, to examine the health of
the ecosystem of the Strait of Georgia and to explore strategies
for change. Participants came from all around the Georgia Strait
region and Washington State, and included representatives of
native, environmental, labour, business, industry, recreational,
academic and governmental organizations as well as many concerned
individuals.

Following the conference, we obtained a federal grant to
transcribe, edit and publish the proceedings of the conference.
The final product of this work, a 23@-page boek entitled The
state of the Strait: Proceedings of a Conference on the Health of
Georgia Strait, was published last fall. The bock contains the
16 papers presented at the conference along with the other

Speeches, discussion and final recommendations.

Becaus* of limited funds, we have not been able to
distribute free copies of the book as widely as we had hoped. We
have, however, enclosed a photocopy of the recommendations.
These were developed in the monthe following the conference and
represent the collective wisdom of the 332 conference
participants, including the many expert speakers and panelists
who took part. Since we know you receive a great deal of mail,
we have tried to assist you by highlighting the recommendations:
that are of direct relevance to you,

We believe these recommendations are extremely important and
hope you will be able to seriously consider them. We welcome
your response and would appreciate knowing if, and how, you will
act on the recommendations. Should you wish a copy of the book
of Proceedings, we would be pleased to forward it to you.

We look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,
