Kermodes Basketball Month without play couid prove perilous CAM MACKAY is in a tough position. He coaches a talented basketball team. They’re going to the AAA high school basketball championships next month in Vancouver, Everything should be rosy. The only problem is that they don’t have any more regular season games scheduled and their only'AAA competi- tion in this zone is no more. Part way through the season Kitimat’s Mount Elizabeth Senior Secondary’s boys basketball team folded. That left the hometown Kermodes without a AAA op- ponent to play in zone championships, It's not that the Kermodes aren’t exci- ted about going to Vancouver Mar. 13-17, but a one month lull in high school play could potentially hurt them. “This is the first time we haven't had anyone to play in zone championships,” said coach Cam MacKay, rsch C x. 4 ia eee A 1s “ey ae eee ch 1-8, 2@6 Winter Clnb, Kitimat reek Golf & Winter Clo and The Terrace Curting Club e wat" Sponsored by the BC Curling Ceimission and “It's a long, long, time from February 17 to March 13,” he said. “It’s too long.” MacKay is also a little concerned about what this means for the champion- ship draw, If they go in unranked and win their first. game they could well go on to play one of the top four teams in the second round pick — something MacKay is hop- ing to avoid. ; Enemy number one could be the White Rock Christian Warriors. “St would not surprise us if we did see them at the provincials,” said MacKay. “Hopefully not in the first or second round,” That team was here in early February and outplayed the Kermodes winning two games in arow. _ ; But the experience showed the Ker- modes exactly what kind of competition they're sure to face at provincials. o e awe ae B.C. high school curling championships in Terrace SIXTEEN high school curling teams will be converging in both Tetrace and Kitimat Mar, 1-3 for the B.C. high school curling championships.
