Grade 8 volleyball
title stays in town

Grade 8 Northwest
Zone Volleyball cham-
pionships were won by
Thornhill girls and Skeena
boys during a one-day
playoff held at Skeena and
Thornhill high schools on
Nov. 8th.

Both sides used a dou-
ble knockout series, and it
took the Skeena boys an
extra set against Kitwanga
to capture their title.
Skeena won ‘A’ side by
downing Smithers 15-12,
15-9 in the ‘A’ final.

On the one-loss ‘B’ side,
Kitwanga came out the
winner by beating Kitimat
15-10, 2-15, 15-9 in the
final.

Kitwanga then handed
Skeena its first loss,

beating the eventual
champions 1-15, 15-3,
15-11, With both teams
having lost one set, they
had to go at it again.
Skeena played tougher
and took the title 15-5,
15-4,

Kitwanga came out with
the most sportsmanlike
team trophy. All-stars
named to the boys’ side
were Rob Alexander and
Dwayne Johnson of Kit-
wanga, Jorge Silva and
Paul Manhas of Skeena,
Cam Muirhead of Kiti-
mat, and Chad Ziegler of
Thornhill.

It was somewhat easier
for the Thornhill girls,
who won ‘A’ side with a
15-8, 11-15, 15-9 decision

down to ‘B’ side where
they lost 15-12, 15-11 in
the final to Hazelton.

Hazelton then went up
against Thornhill for the
championship. Thornhill
kept their winning streak
intact by downing
Hazelton 15-11, 11-15,
15-12 for the title.

Hazelton was awarded
the most sportsmanlike
team trophy. All-stars
were Carmen Bell and
Rochelle Pelletier of
Skeena, Kristine
Torgalsen of Thornhill,
Kim Wilson of Hazelton,
Denine Meet of Kitwanga,
and Karla Street of
Chandler Park.
