Huge Grants for’
Manpower Training

A few three year agreement
to increase the availability and
improve the quality of skilled
manpower in the Province of
British Columbia has been
signed by Manpower and Im-
migration Minister Robert
Andras, B.C. Minister of
Education Mrs. Eileeg Dailly,
and B.C. Minister of Labour Mr.
William King. .

. The Ministers said this
agreement will play an integral
part in ensuring that skilled
people will be available to meel
the demands of British
Columbia's economy.

As well as benefitting the «

over-all economy of the
province, the agreement will
offer B.C. workers an important
opportunity ‘to upgrade their
earning power by offering them
amore, effective and com-
prehensive range of, training
, assistance.

This ig the second such
agreement signed between
Ottawa and lhe provinces. A
similar agreement was signed
with the Province of Quebec on
July 2, 1974. © It replaces the:
existing one which was signed
in 1967. .

The agreement acknowledges
that.. Manpower Training
programs can only be fully

through its training institutions,
may contract with industries lo
provide part of the training
agreed upon under the in-
stitutional training part of the
agreement. Further, the in-
dustries may purchase from

required by an employer under
an industrial training contract.

To ‘ensure that effective
planning for British Columbia's
growing manpower needs can
be carried oul, a Manpower
Needs Commiltee has been
established. This committee
assesses the cufrent and” an-
ticipated manpower needs in

the identified priority needs.

For the fiscal year 1974-75,
Oltawa will make not less Lhan
$18,396,000 available to the
province of British Columbia
for the purchase of Institutional
Training, including Apprentice
Training, and for the payment
of administrative costs incurred

pended in 1974-75, on Training

1975-76 and 76-77, will be ad-
justed to reflect the percentage
increase in the National Con-
sumer Price Index as’ deter-
mined by Statistics Canada.
