World labor marks May Day SOVIETS HAIL BIG GAINS ON MAY DAY MOSCOW — May Day in the Soviet Union is a demon- stration of the whole people for peace and also of victor- ies in production and higher living standards. The figures cited in speech- es and articles and proudly displayed on signs and plac- ards in the May Day parades bear eloquent witness to the great upward swing in the economy of the Soviet Un- ion which is fast gaining on the United States. Here are some of those figures: @ Industrial production in the USSR in 1962 was 400% that of 1950. The increase in the USA was only 58%. @ Soviet agricultural out- put increased by 54% an- nually during the past eight years, while the annual in- crease in the ee States was 1.7%. @ During the past 10 years, 103 million people, nearly half the entire Soviet popula- tion, have moved into new or fully rebuilt homes. @The Soviet Union is the acknowledged world leader in space exploration and many branches of science, in education medical care and social security, and is not on- ly stepping on the heels of the in production but has ee. taken first place in the world in coal and coke, iron ore, woollens, locomot- ives and electrical engines, butter and other goods. @ Soviet industry last year grew by 8.2%, while farmers produced twice as much grain as in 1953. @ The- chemical industry gave 17% more goods than in the first three months of 1962, plastics 23%, farm machin- ery 19%, machine - building 13%. ~ ; @ There were 40 million more square yards of cotton, woolen and silk stuffs pro- duced than in the first quar- ter of last year, 5,100,000 more tons of oil, 44,000 more television sets, 116,000 more washing machines, 25,000 more refrigerators, 36,000,000 rubles worth more of furni- ture, etc., etc. @ Of decisive importance is the fact that labor produc- tivity this year was 5.4% higher than in the same per- iod of 1962.
