World labor marks May Day

SOVIETS HAIL BIG
GAINS ON MAY DAY

MOSCOW — May Day in
the Soviet Union is a demon-
stration of the whole people
for peace and also of victor-
ies in production and higher
living standards.

The figures cited in speech-
es and articles and proudly
displayed on signs and plac-
ards in the May Day parades
bear eloquent witness to the
great upward swing in the
economy of the Soviet Un-
ion which is fast gaining on
the United States.

Here are some of those
figures:

@ Industrial production in
the USSR in 1962 was 400%
that of 1950. The increase in
the USA was only 58%.

@ Soviet agricultural out-
put increased by 54% an-
nually during the past eight
years, while the annual in-
crease in the ee States
was 1.7%.

@ During the past 10 years,
103 million people, nearly
half the entire Soviet popula-
tion, have moved into new or
fully rebuilt homes.

@The Soviet Union is the
acknowledged world leader
in space exploration and

many branches of science, in
education medical care and
social security, and is not on-
ly stepping on the heels of the

ee. taken first place in
the world in coal and coke,
iron ore, woollens, locomot-
ives and electrical engines,
butter and other goods.

@ Soviet industry last year
grew by 8.2%, while farmers
produced twice as much grain
as in 1953.

@ The- chemical industry
gave 17% more goods than in
the first three months of 1962,
plastics 23%, farm machin-
ery 19%, machine - building
13%. ~ ;

@ There were 40 million
more square yards of cotton,
woolen and silk stuffs pro-
duced than in the first quar-
ter of last year, 5,100,000
more tons of oil, 44,000 more
television sets, 116,000 more
washing machines, 25,000
more refrigerators, 36,000,000
rubles worth more of furni-
ture, etc., etc.

@ Of decisive importance
is the fact that labor produc-
tivity this year was 5.4%
higher than in the same per-
iod of 1962.

The Soviet people are
marching this May Day with
songs of victory in battles for
peace and in peaceful compe-
tition on their lips.

by May Day

Mayor Charlotte Whit-
ton, who attended Mos-
cow’s May Day celebra-
tion, told reporters she
thought the Western press
paid too much attention to
the military portion of the
parade, “without due at-
tention to other features.”

She said she was im-
pressed by the general hol-
iday spirit. Referring to
people dancing in the
street, she said it reminded
her of coronation crowds
in London.

China economy

shows growth

PEKING — Reflecting the
general upturn in China’s ec-
onomy, Peking held its larg-
est May Day celebration since
1959, featured by. numerous
parades, 11 elaborate floats,
numerous sports events and
evening fireworks.

The city’s eight big parks
were jammed with people
watching performances and
also taking part in dancing,
singing and games.

From early morning march-
ing contingents converged on
Tien An Men Square, centre
of some of the more spectacu-
lar activities. But hundreds
of thousands also watched
football, basketball and ac-
robatics in gymnasiums and
stadiums throughout the cap-
ital, while shifting thousands
enjoyed open-air concerts, op-
eras and plays in the parks.

The merrymakers were cel-
ebrating impressive victories
in recent months on the agri-
cultural and industrial fronts
which have resulted in more
food and consumer goods on

Italy celebrates
victory of left

ROME — What a May Day!
In Rome, Milan, Turin, Naples
and other cities huge demon-
strations have celebrated the
tremendous victory of the left
in the general election.

The demonstrations were
organized by the C.G.I.L.
(General Confederation of La-
bor, uniting Communist and
Socialist trade unionists), and
tens of thousands came to cel-
ebrate in the San Giovanni
Square here.

There was a huge banner
reading: ‘In the factories, on
the land and in the offices —
NO to facism.” Many demon-

strators. held aloft posters
reading: “No Polaris rockets
for Italy.”

Luciano Lama, C.G.I.L. sec-
retary, said the results of the
election would have far-reach-
ing economic and political af-
fects for the workers.
