| END THE DEADLOCK - NEGOTIATE TO END THE COLD WAR

Make your voice heard for peace

Following is the full text of the May Day state-
ment issued jcintly by the national executive and British
Columbia-Y ukon committees of the Labor-Progressive
party:

People of Canada!

The first of May is the 60th international worker's
day—MAY DAY. | Sixty years ago the North Am-
erican working people set aside the first of May to
demonstrate for the 8-hour dey. Since then it has
become the ’special day of the year when the working
men and women of all countries stretch out the hand
of friendship to one another in international solidarity
and labor unity.
; We working people need international solidarity
today more than ever. The selfish, brutal men of the
imperialist camp are conspiring to turn worker against
worker for the unleashing of World War 111. Tum
back these efforts by your solidarity and friendship.
Knetw that the socialist countries - - almost half of
mankind - - are not our, enemies but our friends - -
that socialism means peace, while capitalism means
War.

There will be no war if the working people of

all countries by their power unite to stay the hand of **

the atomaniacs. At this time of feverish war provoca-
tions, war propaganda and war preparations, lift
your voices for peace!

We can have peace - - we Canadians who twice
in a generation have been at war. The cause of
peace is in your hands, the vast majority. The St.
Laurent gavernment has sold Canada to the Yankee
dollar imperialists of Wall Street in order to reap
profits from war.

Yes, Ottawa can be compelled to change its
cold war foreign policy to a policy of accepting
peaceful co-existence and peaceful competition with
the socialist sector of the world - - if labor and the
people unite to take up the struggle to compel the
St. Laurent government to:

@ Call on the United Nations to outlaw
the atom-bomb and strictly enforce that decision.

e Declare in advance that the first gov-
ernment to drop an aiom bomb stands exposed as
a war criminal before all mankind.

e@ Propose in the United Nations that ne-
gotiations be held right away between the U.S.,
Soviet Union, France, Britain and People’s Chi-
na to sign a PACT of PEACE. »

@ Sip discriminating’ against the Soviet
Union, China and the People’s Democracies of
Europe, recognize People’s China, and open up
trade with these countries to provide jobs fw
Canadians. :

Peace or war, is the critical question that con-
fronts all Canadians. On its outcome depends our
political and ecdnomic future, the security of our
homes and our families - - yes, life itself.

On May Day millions will be marching all over
the earth, to demand peace and raising the glorious
banners of brotherhood between the working peoples
of all races, languages and creeds and religious faiths.

Let us on May Day join in this world-wide
movement of brotherhood and give notice to the war-
makers that the people of the world will defend
democracy from all attacks and that the march of
the peoples toward socialism will not be halted.

Unite, meet, demonstrate, on May Day,
1950!

Lift your voices against the warmongrs and
come f rward for peace and Canadian indepen
dence from the Yankee dollar imperialists!

Protest against Ottawa's plans to cripple
civil righis by “‘outlawing Communism”!

Demand that the Canadian g ernment call
a halt to its cold war policy and speak to all
other nations in favor of negotiations to ban the
aitm-bomb and to brand as a war criminal the
first government to use’ it!
