“HE .UNFOUGHT BATTLE:
Nanimo City and Harewood Im-
provement District have jointly
decided to move their garbage
dump to a new location because
of the proximity of the present
location to Chase River village
where the residents have been
annoyed for years by rodents and
acrid smoke from burning gar-
bage.

Like so many decisions of that
august body of nincompoops this
one is as poorly thought out as
the other projects, The new dump
location is no further away from
Chase River than before with the
added disadvantage of being lo-
cated in a cul-de-sac where there
are an additional 50 or more
South Wellington homes which up
to the present has not been af-
fected by the present dump.

Chase River ratepayers are
up in arms and the ratepayers of
South Wellington maintain adump
in their district will not betoler-
ated, period. Some suggestions
made at a meeting last week were
almost amusing if they hadn’t
been made with such sincerity.
One lady of determination said
she would dump all her garbage
on Nanaimo streets and take a
chance on a littering charge, All
agreed to set up pickets at the
entrance and not allow trucks
to pass,

Under the present weak-kneed
pollution act it is not possible
to stop the project until such a
time as garbage is dumped and it
is proven to cause air pollution,
The whole affair is about to be-
come one of the hottest fights
in history of this part of the
Island. The bright spot in the
whole affair is the determina-

AS RUMOR HAS IT: The boys
at the legislature are speculat-
ing the date for the next pro-
vincial election, Government
members are accusing Opposi-
tion members of obstruction as
usual, but with greater venom
than previously, which goes to
prove something. These Socreds
are a canny lot with a scheme
behind all their actions.

One cabinet minister said he
was not in favor of pollution con-
trol at the provincial level for
it would tend to interfere with
the free enterprise system ofthis
dynamic society: indeed, Steel-
head trout are not the only fish
that can slip off the hook, In the
meantime, seven thousand people
in Port Alberni signed a petition
to have the government take some
action in the matter of pollution,

The Minister of Health declared
he is in favor of public-owned
ambulances under BCHIS, How-
ever, he did not say this neces-
sary service would be taken by
his department, It sounds very
much like a bit of premature
politicing. The excuse for not
taking the ambulances over now,
“federal legislation does not per-
mit the province to operate am-
bulances.” Strange, the Saskat-
chewan Medicare had no trouble
in that regard, federal fegislation
notwithstanding.

Strange too, how Nanaimo’s
40-year-old General Hospital
was sold to the architect who
condemned the building some two
years back the price was
twenty thousand and it is consid-
ered it will take a month to fix
the building over to general
offices after the area is rezoned
to business rather than residen-
tial as now, It is expected there
will be many complaints from
residents in the area; but nobody
on council pays any attention to
complaints, only around election
time; Too bad the electorate have
such short memories.
