A band of racists are handing out filth in the form of leaflets embellished with swastikas and _ bearing an Arlington, Virginia, USA, address. Authorities which more than once have confiscated allegedly obscene books from news- vendors, and which have on several occasions handed out large fines to publishers of obscene material, turn a blind eye to the horrifying material being handed out by this Nazi gang. The leaflets contain perverted racist distribes again Negroes, Jews, and vicious attacks on liberals, ‘‘reds’’, human dignity and human equality. They put forward a final solution — National ‘‘Socialism’”’ the way Hitler practised it. In other words, the gas ovens. There is a law in B.C. which is supposed to protect people of all races and religions. Why then are the Nazis allowed to peddle their garbage? The Chief Magistrate of Vancouver, — he who would put a stop to ‘‘violence’’ on the street, must be told to investigate and put a stop to the Nazi dissemenation of violence and sadism on the street. Attorney-General Les Peterson, who would see teachers muzzled, must be informed that open incitement to exterminate people is being propagated throughout this province, and that decent people want it stopped— now! Endowmentlandsteal? UBC student paper, the Ubyssey, reported last week there is a scheme afoot to build a hotel-convention centre on valuable university endowment lands. An unnamed spokesman for the hotel developer said the hotel would be a “‘luxury”’ affair, with rooms costing in the neighbour- hood of $40-$50 a night. The endowment lands have HELP THE PT RENEW YOUR SUB long been eyed by land, speculators as the site for businesses which have no relationship to university needs. Ubyssey editors point out the new scheme is obviously a first step in a general process of development, none of it for low- cost housing or other needed expansion of university facili ties. Citizens concerned with education in this province must keep a sharp eye on what is going on re the endowment lands, and protest loudly if the Bennett government tries to turn any part of the land over to free en- terprise developers. As the stu- dents say, a luxury hotel is the last thing they or the university need. PACIFIC TRIBUNE — NOV. 20 — PAGE 12 1 VLC WIRES TRUDEAU— | GET ECONOMY MOVING | The Vancouver Labor Council sent a sharply worded telegram to Prime Minister Trudeau following Tuesday’s regular meeting, unemployment situation in B.C. The wire said, ‘‘The VLC in- sists the federal government, in | co-operation with provincial and municipal governments, immediately implement a crash program to get the econo- my moving.” _ It urged emergency winter works programs; the start of all federal works programs pre- sently on the drawing boards; immediate increased un- employment benefits plus the extension of those benefits to long-term unemployed; the start of massive government housing projects; the start of a federally subsidized Canadian merchant fleet and any other move to beat the jobless situa- tion in Canada, which is the high- est in the industrially-develop- ed world. Welfare Minister Gaglardi was also blasted in a resolution which condemned the latest pro- _ JOBLESS Cont'd from pg. 1 program of action to provide jobs. The Communist Party statement said: ‘“‘The Communist Party of Canada calls upon the federal and all governments across Canada to take emergency measures now to deal with the serious unemployment situa- tion which is growing from month to month, and will reach calamitous heights this winter, unless something drastic is done to provide jobs. “The unemployed cannot wait for three years until Canada can reach the full employment as forecast by finance minister Benson. In fact, such forecasts are an admission that the govern- ment has no idea where the economy is going. Nor is it full employment as seen by the government, when__ the unemployed rate reaches 4 to 5 per cent of the labor force, as an acceptable situation. “The trade unions and all democratic and progressive - forces in the country need to raise a demand for an immed- iate increase in unemployment insurance, and action to provide jobs or an income for the unem- ployed that will provide the jobless and their families with a decent standard of life. “The situation is serious indeed. The recession, aggravated by the government’s policies of austerity — obsten- sibly to fight inflation, but which, in fact accentuates that inflationary spiral — _ is developing. “For the youth the situation is. devastating and intolerable. The number of young people between 14 and 24 years of age looking for work has increased from 51,000 a year ago to 159,000 this October. ‘“‘What is obviously needed is a crash program of public works, including low cost public housing, development of resources, industry and communications, along with expansion of trade with all coun- tries on a mutually advan- tageous basis. “The Canadian people must urge the government to act on this immediately.”’ A. _ demanding action on the critical posal coming from the minister that social welfare recipients be used as cheap labor. If in fact there are jobs available, the un- employed should be hired at union wages only, the VLC de- manded. Delegates approved a motion from Jack Phillips, CUPE, that an invitation be sent to Louis Laberge, president of the Que- bec Federation. of Labor, to ad- dress a labor rally in Vancou- ver to outline Quebec labor’s view of the current situation in that province. Phillips said organized labor in Vancouver will be much better informed if they can hear the viewpoint of the largest organized labor body in Quebec. It will do much to dispel the chauvinism of the English- speaking Canadian towards French Canadians, he said. The B.C. Teachers Federa- tion asked for endorsation of their stand demanding the re- peal of the Socred govern- ment’s order-in-council aimed at outlawing academic free- dom. Delegates approved the demand for repeal of the edict. The VLC will circularize election cards in support of COPE-NDP candidates for the civic election. There are some 144,000 homes to be covered, sec- retary Paddy Neale told dele- gates, and he urged every affi- liate to get out and cover the city with the material as well as sup- port the campaign financially. CUPE candidate Harry Rankin spoke briefly to the dele- gates, informing them of some of the moves of the present NPA- Big Business council which has taken money from the pockets of working people in the city. “Like it or lump it,” he told the delegates, ‘‘politics run your life.” The council voted $100 to- wards the Burnaby Citizens Association (BCA) election fund. Tom Constable, one of BCA’s candidates, said they have a good progressive slate, with a program geared to the needs of working people. The present council’s votes are stacked against the working companies such as Marathon Realty, the Block 42 developers, etc., while taxes grow heavier on the small homeowner and “savings” are made by giving non-union businessmen city con- tracts, Rankin charged. The B.C. Federation of Labor notified delegates that A. B. Dick products are ‘‘hot,’’ and also bake goods of Venice Bakery in North Vancouver. Crane products are also still “hot.’’ A hostile reaction was given to a letter from the Pacific Re- gion of Manpower, which an- nounced a ‘“‘job retraining”’ pro- gram for the months November to March. “We have plenty of first class well-trained labor in this pro- vince,’”’ said Cliff Rundgren of the IBEW. ‘‘What they need are jobs!”’ . “There are scores of well- trained carpenters and others. who are not even eligible for un- - employment insurance be- cause of this summer’s lock- out,” said Nick Podnivinikoff, of the Carpenters Union. ‘‘They do not need retraining — they need jobs, not charity, not hand- : outs. Men need incomes for their families, not stipends to go to school on a retraining. program!” Alex Watson, CUPE, pointed out that young people who are trying to upgrade their educa- — tion while drawing unemploy- ment benefits are being cut off the insurance. The VLC endorsed an un- employed demonstration called to coincide with a visit on Thurs- day of this week to New West- minster by Premier Bennett, who is scheduled to open the Douglas College in that area. Delegates approved a re- solution presented by Josephine Halleck, Hotel and Restaurant Workers, that senior citizens be- given year-round bus passes with- out a means test. An amend- | ment proposed by Bob Lake, ATU, to remove the restrictive ‘hours for such passes was also en- dorsed. man.
