ON GOLDEN WING, Doug and P.J. (Pirjo) McPhail of Vanderhoof, seen above on their 84 Honda Gold Wing Aspencade, were among the many northwestern motorcycle enthusiasts who converged on Terrace last weekend for this year's Ride For Sight. This is the fourth year the couple have taken part in the event which raises money for research into retinal pizmentosis, a serious eye disease. ‘Church plans new centre for youth ‘TERRACE — The Terrace ' Pentecostal Assembly is work- ing on a plan to open a youth centre, °- Pastor John Caplin.said the centre idea is in response to a need by young people for a place to gather, “There's often no place for young. people or nothing for them to do, They then find something that’s counter- productive,”’ he said. The need grew out of weekly sessions of the church’s Christ Ambassadors youth group and by church young people talking to'others around town, Caplin added. oe | THE WORLD IS YOURS.../F | RIGHT PEOPLE... In years gone > by, amateur radio operators tended to be technically oriented individuals but that, says local radio buff Kim Olfert, is no- longer the case. ‘You're finding now there’s all kinds of people.” Olfert, a member of the Ter- race Amateur Radio club, said they also find satisfaction in dif- ferent facets of the hobby. While he began as a builder of radio sets and now enjoys. morse code, ‘‘many. get enjoyment from getting involved in con- tests to see how many countries can be contacted and on how many frequencies.’ Still others simply tiked the opportunity to talk to fellow hobbyists, particularly those in far off countries. Depending on the frequency being used and the conditions at the time, he said the average operator could “more often ‘then not’ reach Europe. Satellites even offered the op- portunity to talk to radio hams on ‘the other side of the world. - However, he pointed out the in- dividual. had to wait for the - satellite to circle the giobe before getting a reply. And if that is still not far enough away, they could always try talking to the moon! Olfert explained that was achieved by directing a transmission at the moon and then waiting for the echo to return to Earth. “‘It’s: really unlimited, what you can do,” he added. To obtain a federal Depart- ment of Communications licence, operators had first to obtain their proficiency and radio certificates, That involved passing examinations in theory, - basic electronics and rules and - regulations as well as attaining a speed of 10 words per minute in morse code, While that might sound somewhat daunting, Olfert em- phasized, ‘It is attainable.” He said the Terrace Amateur Benson Optical ~ - Northern Brugs Shefiald & Sons West End Chevron B&G Grocery CFNR 990 AM...
