“This week I would like to tell you a little about how much the Mills Memorial Hospital aux- liary has contributed to that facility. But first a little history. The auxiliary was formed in 1948 when 30 ladies gathered in the lounge of. the old Red Cross hospital. elected - president, Mrs. Vic Geraud vice-president and Miss Elliot Head secretary with Mrs. ‘Frank McGillivray in charge of work done in members’ homes. For her many years work on the auxiliary, Mary Little was made an honorary member. Housed in several locations in "its early years, the Thrift Shop moved to its present location (4544 Lazelle Ave.) in 1969. That land’ had been purchased Hl years earlier from Mary Spencer — she moved to Boisie, Idaho — by the Terrace and District Hospital association with money donated by local mills, The shop was built largely by volunteers, such. as Emil Wirtl and Joe Smoley, using donated materials. The. steady flow of revenue generated by the shop helps the auxiliary achieve its aim of assisting the hospital wherever possible in providing better health care for the patients. It is stocked with clothing, footwear and household articles, all of which are donated by the public, - Another contributor is the gift shop, located in the hospital lobby. It sells a variety of items, including toiletries, books, magazines and knitted items to both patients and the public. : The auxiliary donates $500 annually to the Nurses Educa- tion Fund and four bursaries of $700. each year to Terrace students entering the medical training field. Over the years, it has also donated thousands of. Mary Little was Susie Green dollars to the hospital which has allowed it to purchase everything from J.V. stands, ari EEG machine, fetal heart monitor and an electric bed to televisions, toys and furniture, All of these things have been made possible by the many, many hours of work put in by volunteers manning the shops. Volunteers like Helen Booth, Margaret O’Brien, Giuseppina Bernardo and Fran. Lindstrom, all of whom have worked two to three times a week for the past 15 years, and Sally Smaha who is now in charge of the Thrift Shop. . And, of course, by the generous donations to the shop by the public. If you would like to donate any items, you can phone the shop (635-3512) or Sally Smaha (635-4243). It is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:00-3:00 p.m.and Saturdays, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For information on the aux- iliary, phone Aveline (635-5650) or Lorna (635-7307).
