(aé-30) MONTREAL (CP) — U.S. \ By JUDY CREIGHTON CP Family Editor Although consumers have, enjoyed lower pork pricea in Tecent weeks, a Cross- Canada survey by The Canadian Press this week shows that cholce cuta are rising in price. The survey of 12 cities for the monthly food basket reveals centre-cut loin chops were up in price in nine cities. In Regina, a pound of chops jumped $1.10 to §2.59. Dayre Peer, general manager of the Ontario Pork Producers, said in an in- terview he suspected the increase in pork loin prices could be attributed to a rtage. . “A lot of loins are being exported to Japan just now,” he sald. “That could have created a shortage, In ad- dition, the retailer has, no doubt, put the price up to offset recent specials.” Peer said he didn’t think that prices on lower quality pork cuts would be affected, since only loins are exported. SUGAR INCREASES . Sugar’ prices, which have rema fairly stable over the laat two years, showed some marked increase in September. Melville Davidson, president of the Canadian Sugar Institute, said in an Interview that “sugar prices have been inching up and now higher retail prices reflect that of world raw sugar levels," He gaid that higher prices are due in part to recent hurricane damage in the Weat Indies and record. trading in futures on the New York Stock Exchange in the last week. However, Davidson did not foresee a dramatic Increase as consumers experienced five years ago when sugar ie were at an all-time Fresh produce ‘such as to- matoes and apples continued to be excellent buys in most cities surveyed, Both are at the height of their harvest season.
