§ FRONT CRAWL - Part 1 P THURSDAY, JUNE 10, 1971 * PAGE 11 Bee ee This is the fastest of the me known swimming’ strokes, The basis of all learning and teach- ing of swimming should be the ability to swim this slroke cor- em rectly over any distance, The body should lie straight Mand as near parallel to tho surface as possible head down face in the water, surface should be level with the hairline in the forehead, In order to see where SF one is swimming the eyes should be open looking” forward and slightly downward. Raising the head to gauge direction tends te make the fect sink, therefore after doing so it should be re- turned to its original position as saon as possible. a THE LEG MOVEMENT The legs work close together as in the flutler kick, or better still, the same as in walking. All movement is from the hips, and undulates down the length of the leg ending with a whip- ‘like action of the foot. The flexibility of the ankles is im- portant so that the whip action is possible, There should be six beats of the feet ta each com- plete cycle of the arms, If the ankles do not flex it is possible to cause a drag on the body instead of moving forward. The feet should not be allowed to move more than 12 - 18 inches up and down, and the heals only allowed to just break the sur- face of the water: Afler that they perforin no effective use. In learning the foot and leg movements it must be stressed that the feet should be kicked gently, and try to relax the body at all times, THE ARM MOVEMENT From a starting position af the Mutter kick, with arms out- stretched in front of the. body head down faet kicking, the arm is pulled under the water and recovered ayer the water. ‘The pull starts as the hand enters the waler and pressure is ex- erled all through the movenient unlil the hand leaves the water, ” Continued in next lesson “(Clip and Save) * copvrlaht 1971," Torento: Tolearam’ Syndicate running, A Prince Rupert batter leans into the “TERRACE HERALD, TERRACE BG. ¢ + “ESTIVAL: Terrace ‘and throughout the I province last weekend. _ Twoevents marked the end of ' the Festival in the Terrace area. le The first waa the Terrace Sky ' Divers B.C, Championships held at Frank's Field.
