Chancellor Konrad Adenauer of the West German government took no chances on suffering defeat
in the general election last Sunday. His coalition regime rigged the elections.
In the first place, there was the new electoral law permitting representation in the new parliament

er.”

In Hesse in the American zone,
the government banned all open
air meetings by the Communists
on the ground that they would
“endanger security and public or-

der.” In Essen, British zone, police
closed down two Communist. daily
newspapers.,

The All-German People’s party
and the League of Germans were
subjected to similar persecution,
though not to the same extent as

the Communists. The Adenauer
regime’s idea was to make the very
idea of peace through agreement
of the Big Four powers a ‘“‘Com-
munist idea,” and then to perse-
cute those who advocated it as
“Communists.”

Adenauer ruthlessly struck
down all press opposition to his
government’s policies.

Here are some of his violations
of press freedom all in direct con-
travention of the Bonn Republic.

During 1953 up to the present,
102 trials have been staged against
the members of the editorial staff
of the Hamburger Volkszeitung.
Their crime: they described Aden-

auer’s signature on the Bonn con-
tractual agreement and the Paris
European Defense Community
treaties as treason to Germany! ©

At the beginning of 1953, Reich-
elt, Heinemann and Kellner, all
members of the editorial staff of
the Hanover Journal were arrest-
ed.

This spring, free-lance journal-
‘ist Ralf Giordano was jailed: for
two months for writing that the
Hamburg Senate was favoring the
development of fascism and anti-
Semitism.

Numerous printing plants have
been closed and the machinery
stolen, as happened at Lippep-Det-
mold and Bielefeld.

At the same time Adenauer has
been helping Willmy, publisher of
the anti-Semitic Nazi organ Der
Stuermer, whose editor-in-chief,
Julius Streicher was executed as a
war criminal, to build up a new
publishing concern of six news-
Papers in North Bavaria! e

Cuban people ghting Batista

The Batista terror continues | *

here in Cuba, especially against
the Popular Socialist party.

Nevertheless, in the midst of all
the terror, a strong united front
opposition movement is develop-
ing from below. While there na-
turally exists some fear of perse-
cution,.the masses of Cubans are
in a militant, fighting mood.

Shop workers by the hunderds
are openly signing petitions ask-
ing for the release of Lazaro Pena,
on grounds he was not mixed up
in the Santiago affair and is a
widely respected union leader.

The government itself is ob-
viously aware that the Popular
Socialist party did not participate
in the unsuccessful July 26 putsch
in Santiago and that PSP had con-
sistently warned against such ad-
venturist tactics.

Santiago authorities. said noth-
ing of suspected Communist par-
ticipation until General Batista
himself raised the cry three days
later.

Nevertheless the PSP has .been
the objective of its most severe
repressive ‘measures.

Five of its members were arrest-
ed as “participants” in the putsch
even though they were hundreds

Batista is known to be holding
jailed opposition leaders as_ host-
ages to be executed if ex-President
Prio attempts to bring off an arm-
ed coup. :

Prio, leader-in-exile of the
Autentico party, is an opportun-
ist whose regime was marked
by rifling of public funds, op-
pression of trade unions, mur-
dering of trade ,union leaders,
harassment of the progressive
movement. He was replaced by
Batista because a stronger man
was needed to keep down the
popular forces.

The threat of such an attempt-

ed coup is a real one. It is com-

monly rumored here that Prio’s
forces have invested some $4,000,-
000 in planes and arms. His putch-
ist ideas are favored by Ochoa’s
group in the Orthodoxo party and
by Orthodoxo and Autentico youth
groups, while they are vehement-
ly opposed by most working-class
elements, in particular the PSP.

The ill-conceived ‘attempted
putsch of July-26 in Santiago was
engineered by a group of Ortho-
doxos who undoubtedly wanted to
beat Prio’s Autentico’s to the
punch. They counted on assuming
leadership themselves of Prio’s ex-
pected uprising.

The disastrous results were ut-
ter failure of this isolated attempt:
about 100 dead, including soldiers
who shot ‘each other in the con-

fusion; and a pretext for Batista’s
government to abrogate all civil
liberties.

Nevertheless Prio did not seem
to profit by the lesson. His com-

ment on the July 26 events, made

in Miami, Florida, was that they
were unfortunate but that “there
will be other uprisings like that
one while Batista continues to
usurp power.”
