PACIFIC TRIBUNE—OC

PLANS TO
CONTINUE
WAR

— Endicott

Dr. James G. Endicott, presi-
dent of the Canadian Peace Con-
gress, is of the opinion that the
Nixon administration plans to
continue its war of aggression
against Vietnam for another five
years.

He said, “Those who resist the
U.S. war of aggression against
the Vietnamese people will make
a great mistake if they are mis-
-led by the propaganda ballyhoo

. about withdrawal of another
35,000 men by Christmas. The
present plan of Nixon is to keep
a strong fighting force of about
250,000 U.S. troops in Vietnam.
They will not only back up the
Saigon puppets but make sure
that they continue fighting.

“As U.S. News and World Re-
port puts it (Sept. 22, 1969), the
U.S. will take steps alone, at

home and in the war zone to
show the-successor of Ho Chi
Minh that Washington is deter-
mined to fight the war as long
as necessary to ‘obtain an hon-
orable peace.’ This means that
the U.S. puppets in Saigon will
continue to rule, or misrule,
South Vietnam. Hanoi is to be
forced to accept this idea. Mr.
Kissinger, top adviser to Nixon,
say that ‘If Hanoi proves intran-
sigent and the war goes on, we
should seek to achieve as many
of our objectives as possible
unilaterally.’ It adds that Hanoi
is already in serious trouble.
‘Industry is stagnant. Food is
short. Floods have driven thous-
ands from their homes and
morale seems to be sagging.’ We
have heard that story often
since 1951.”

The founding convention of a
“working-class Marxist-Leninist
youth organization” will be held
in Chicago December 26, 28.
A call has been issued by the
“temporary organizing commit-
tee” for the new organization.
Members of the committee are
members of the W. E. B. DuBois
club, young members of the
Communist Party of the United
States and “independent Marx-
ist youth.”

The call says that “young
black, brown and white work-
ers” will constitute the “core
and leadership” of the new or-
ganization. The call says, in
part:

“U.S. capitalist society is a
society challenged by its youth.
Young people seeking a mean-
ingful future are struggling
against a sick society, a society
which attempts to drag the
whole world with it to the grave.

“Millions of young people are
demanding an end to a society
that threatens raankind with nu-
clear annihilation. They demand
an end to imperialist wars, rac-
ism, poverty, exploitation, re-
pression, and the moral and cul-
tural] values of the millionaires.
Tens of thousands of youth are
demanding revolutionary
change.

Why not women too?

By DORIS MAY

An area of: struggle that has
been sadly neglected is the
rights of women.

In all peace actions, in every
peace organization, women play
a vanguard role and numeri-
cally outnumber men. In the
black liberation movement, the
welfare mothers are waging a
brave fight; in the schools, wo-
men are in the forefront, fight-
ing for a better education for
their children. There is no rea-
son why their struggle, the long--
neglected battle for equality of
the sexes should be kissed off
as something to think about and
deal with in the nebulous
future.

In today’s world women have
felt no significant change in
their status either at home or
on the job. A working wife in
the vast majority of cases has
to hold down two full-time jobs.
She must rise and shine early
to hold both of them down.

Before beginning her “ ay-
ing” job, she aust Hehe
cessary household tasks, dress,
feed and bring her child or chil-
dren to a nursery or sitter while
her husband has only to jump
into his pants, enjoy the break-
fast she has prepared and set
off to work. Her day has only
begun! At the end of it, today’s
woman must take the deadly,
stifling subway trip home and,
on. the way, stop to shop for
food prior to preparing it for
her Lord and Master.

Women are warm and loving
creatures and I do not say that
it is unwillingly done; more
often it is a labor of love. But
the man of the household more
often than not takes it for
granted—as his natural birth-

right by reason of having been
born a male.

He disregards her weariness,
is not aware that she may be
oppressed by the heat of the
stove or the tensions of getting
together a hurried meal and more
than likely he can be found
settled in his chair, cool and
comfortable, reading the eve-
ning paper and awaiting his
meal. His wife is busy with
“women’s work” and his sex
frees him from sharing it; rarely
does he have a twinge of con-
science.

Later on, women’s work con-
tinues for there are dishes to be
washed, food prepared for the
next day, washing, ironing or

' both, various household chores

to catch up on; and what is
friend husband doing? Snoozing
before TV or out for an even-
ing’s recreation!

There are exceptions to the
rule, of course, but the excep-
tions all too infrequently are
not to be found among so-called
Progressive men. Men are not
Progressive if they do not un-
derstand the need for women to
sometimes be free from house-
hold drudgery and child care.
And doing something about it.

In the business world today
men follow the same procedures
as they do at Home. The execu-
tive secretary is hired to do all
the drab, dull, uninteresting
work her boss does not care to
do. Who says that men alone
can think? That’ women were
meant to be merely their slaves,
robots to act on cue when a
man commands?

Secretaries arrive in the morn-
ing, dust the boss’s desk, sharpen
his pencils, take note of his ap-
pointments and then settle down
to do his job. In her underpaid

job, she knows that she can
never go any farther regardless
of her skills and talents. -She
may be the brainiest woman in
town and her boss a low-grade
moron, but she is a woman and
therefore must learn to stay “in
her place.”

There is a shortage of skilled
office help for which many
varied reasons are given, such
as transportation problems, the
fussiness of today’s generation
about jobs, early marriage, etc.
But there are two basic real
reasons: 1. Women are more
and more coming to realize they
have higher potentials; and 2.
The wage rate is inadequate in
terms of services expected.

In industry it is the same sto-
ry. Reasons given for the low
rate of pay for women range
widely. One is: “They are not
heads of families and therefore
do not need the amount of
money a man needs for the
same job.” Who said so? There
are proportionately as many
women as men heading families
today and supporting them.

Another is: “A girl only takes
a job until she finds a husband
and then quits, so why put her
in a position of responsibility?”
Hogwash. They do not ,stop to
think that she would perhaps
not feel it necessary to find a
husband and swap one demand-
ing position for another if her
upbringing and conditioning by
men had not convinced her that
this was the only recourse a

- woman has! Career women have

to put up a hard fight to attain

‘any position of authority on an

executive level. They must con-
stantly contend with some man
who is convinced they should
be at home tending the pots
and pans, not breaking into his

“Socialism, in power in one-
third of the world is capturing
the minds of*youth in every op-
pressed and exploited corner of
the globe. The U.S., heartland of
imperialism, is no exception.

Young people are learning
through their own struggles, and
the struggles of other peoples,
that the working class, black
and white, is the one force cap-
able of wresting power from
the billionaire rulers. Young
workers are taught on the as-
sembly line the daily exploita-
tion of capitalism.

“In rebelling against brutal
speed-up, dead-end jobs, killing
working conditions, low pay,
racism, and discrimination bas-
ed on sex, young workers, black
and white are beginning to feel
their power—their class power.

“It is these young workers
which will lead the youth move-
ment into a powerful alliance
with the whole working class
and the nationally oppressed
black, Chicago, Puerto Rican
and Indian peoples—an alliance
for progress and socialism.

“To help build this powerful
alliance, a Marxist - Leninist
youth organization is needed.
Marxism-Leninism is the science
of liberation, the science of
working class victory. It tells

private domain. Faced with a

_ Choice of a not-quite competent

male and a well-qualified female
for desirable positions, the boss
invariably chooses the man. The
boss is a man. Even so, many
brilliant and determined women
are willing to put up the fight
no matter how great the odds
against them; and a few excep-
tions have won the good fight.

Psychologically a woman has
a couple of strikes against her.

A modern boss will tell you »

about the times the female per-
sonnel does not function as ef-
ficiently at specific times of the
month. What they never talk
about is: how much work-time
is lost by male employees for
other reasons—such as liquid
lunches, morning-afters etc.,
which under no circumstances
would ever be overlooked in a
woman.
