In answer to this situation. eight fishing industry organizations asked Don
Cruickshank to hold his Commission - 21 public hearings along the coast
involving the participation of all sectors. His report was distributed in the
winter of 1991. As you see from the quotes provided for this message, he
has outlined workable solutions that treat complex issues to the
satisfaction of senior individuals from the labour, processor. and native
communities.

Clearly there are dissenters, but anyone familiar with the fishery on
our coast will admit that no other four individuals could so deeply
represent knowledge, experience, and success in this industry as the
four quoted here.

We need the new Liberal government to embrace this vision if our future
is to be different than the east coast. There is now a strong move towards
reform within DFO, and an opportunity to set in place policies that will

mean increased stability for coastal communities, rather than economic
decline and hardship.

L have included a transcription of the report's recommendations regarding
coastal communities. Also included is a list of organizations that have
been supplied with a copy of the full report.

On behalf of all coastal residents, I request that your council or
committee pass a motion that this report be adopted by the federal
government as a key instrument in the Department of Fisheries and
Oceans’ reform for the Pacific Region. Send your motion to your MP and
the minister responsible:

Brian Tobin

Minister of Fisheries and Oceans
House of Commons

Room 418 - N, Centre block
Ottawa, Ontario

K1A OA6

So that we may track response, please send a copy of your letter to us as well.

On behalf of our Society and our community, I thank you for your time,
and remain,
Sincerely,

— Michael Moore
