B6 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May 24, 1995 A little black dress HERE ‘N THERE | YVONNE MOEN WHEN SHE WAS 14 years old Nellie Reid begged her parents to buy her a little black salin dress. She wore that same dress 68 years later, in a skit she per- formed on April 23 at the Happy Gang Cenire. The skit was called A Play of 2 Faces, and was about those 68 in- tervening years. Nellie Reid, nee Hull, was born on March 10, 1913 at home ona farm eight miles from Glen Ewen, Saskatchewan, And when Nellie was 14 years old her parents brought her a spe- cial dress to go to dances in tovvn. That dress Nellie said cost her father many bushels of wheat in those days, When the family used to attend dances in town they would get the horses all ready and hamess them up to a box sleigh. Sometimes they used to pick up other farmers along the way. Nel- lie says they would dance all night and get home just in time to milk the cows. When Nellie was a young lady she used to entertain in town with a group of friends, They called themselves the Dog Patch Group, and were even aired on CKCK Radio Regina. And now, just a few weeks ago on April 23, a few friends of Nel- lie decided they should have a be- lated birthday party for her. And Laverne Spencer thought the others should see Nellie model her dress that she kept for all these years, ; Nellie’s skit she performed showed what she was like when she was 14 years old, and what she was like now, at age 82. Believe it or not, she still fils well into that little dress. The dress is black satin with crepe in the front, fully lined, with long sleeves, an ecm coloured colour and lace, It is a little above the knee in length. Also entertaining the crowd that day was Dolly Deane, Dolly and Sandy Norman did the Charleston together. At the gathering Nellie intro- duced some of her family, like her nephew Don Hull, whose birth prompted the purchase of the dress, and his family. She also introduced her son. Dalton Reid and his wife Betty, Nettie said Dalton made his- tory, when after a six and a half hour surgery, during which four tumours were removed, he was out of the hospital in four days, Dalton is now back at the work at Inland Kenworth. Also present was Nellie’s gtandson Al Reid and his wile Karen. Not only do they share their lives, they share their kid- neys. Al’s kidney had failed from diabetic complications, so Karen gave him one of hers. Nellie would like to say thanks to everyone who helped to make the day a wonderful and happy one. Thanks to all her family, like Keith and Brenda Lee Olson and all her good friends, Nellie now has left for Van- couver to undergo cancer treat- ments, She is coping well with the help of family and: friends.
