Not out of sentimentality, but for the kids to recycle into new - decorations next year. About this time every year, I dig out the little bag of old cards, pass _ them the scissors and glue, and I enjoy an hour of busy silence while they work. For some reason, this year I decided to look through the old "leftover cards before handing ‘them over for recycling. It was fun to read last year’s news, messages from nieces and nephews and family friends. _ Then I found a card from 1987 that had somehow survived last ’ year’s card recycling, from our ex-neighbors, Jack and Judy. The note inside was short, and © newsy: “We think of you often _ when Terrace is mentioned. Hope to start skiing again soon. Jack was back io work in Noveniber when he had to go on disability, due to pain in his righ, leg, We should brow the cause soon. Would love to hear: all your news.’” . Jack. What a interesting character. Jack was a logger, a: : person of common sense and strong opinions, Jack was very concerned about the environ- - ment, and backed up his beliefs by living a lifestyle that sup- - ported his beliefs. Jack used a - non-motorized reel mower on his lawn. Less noise, no fuel consumption, and weekly exer-° -. cise to boot. Jack avoided plastics as much as possible, and he picked up litter on his long daily walks. He balked at — plastic disposable razors, Bic lighters, and people who didn’t care about such things. When logging was shut down, Jack baked bread. One time he brought over a fresh hot loaf of whole wheat, steaming in the winter air as he crossed the yard. “Yack will not be able to ski. due to his leg pain, This has really cramped our style”? Jack was a hiker anda - cyclist, He sometimes had pro- - blems with his leg, and I remember he had to give up _cycling up the hill where we liv. ed. But Jack was a healthy LITTER CLEAN- UP IN CITY BUDGET — man, logger-strong, and he hik- ed ‘and skiied through the winter. _ Lremember someone talking 7 . to. me abaut Jack once. He called Jack “‘strange’”’, and an — ’ “old -scrounge’’ because Jack. . picked up litter, bottles; things other people dropped: wherever it was convenient: I bristled at this, indignant that this person didn’t understand. Jack was an ecologist, cleaning up his cor- ner of the earth. Jack lived his beliefs. ‘All this came to mind as I read the Old Christmas card. ' Jack died the next spring. There ‘was cancer in his bones, causing the leg pain that restricted his cycling and ski- ing, This would be the last Christmas card we'd receive with Jack’s name signed at the bottom. 1 kept the card out of the - kid's pile.
