THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM MEMORANDUM TO: City Administrator March 12, 1987 FROM: City Engineer SUBJECT: Fire Flow Requirements In Nerth Mary Hill = Publie Works Committee March 10, 1987 Recommendation: 1. That a new heated underground Pressure Sensing Station be constructed at Celeste to replace the existing above ground station and.that the estimated cost af about $3,000.00 be taken from the una! located funds in the Water Utility Budget. That a stand-by pump suitable for use in the Penny Place Pump Station be Purchased to be used in the event of failure of either of the pumps in the existing Penny Place Station and the estimated cost of $3,000.00 be taken from the unallocated funds in the Water Utility Budget. Background and Comments: The current Mary Hill water Supply fs provided from two different directions. In the winter time the supply comes from a high pressure main in the Trenton Street area through a pressure reducing valve at Belle Place. In the summer this supply is insufficient and, instead, the area is served by Pumps at Penny Place which are used to build up the pressure. Two pumps are available and these may be either both off, one on, or both on depending on the demand. In order to control! the pumps, there is a Pressure Sensing Station at Celeste which sends a signal to the Pumps when the pressure drops below a predetermined point. The existing Pressure Sensing Station is always shut down in the winter for two reasons. The first is that the Penny Place Pump Station ts not used to Provide water to the area, and the second is that the Pressure Sensing Station is subject to freezing, since it consists of tubes filled with water exposed above the ground. The problem with the shutdown of the Pressure Sensing Station in the winter is that if a nigh damand for water jis placed on our system, the high pressure main from Trenton Street is not able to provide for the demand.
