Aé - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 11, 1999 Victoria tightens budget Home cleaning service cut - A BUDGET crunch has spelled the end of home cleaning services for infirm and elderly people in the northwest. The approximately $400,000 the Northwest Community Health Services Society was spending on home cleaning will instead be used on clients’ personal care, says society continuing care manager Dave Dennis. “The realily is, we're going to have more of an impact if we pul money into bathing, feeding and toileting,’ he said. The society, once called the Skeena Health Unit, had to find a way to cut spending when its budget from the health ministry was itself cut, Dennis added, “Based on the current budget we would have deficits if we kept providing cleaning services,”’ he said, Mike Beausoleil Cleaning services slopped June 1, and to date 11 clients © ‘have had their cleaning services taken away. ‘The sociely bad used home support workers from the Terrace and District Community Services Society to pro- vide home cleaning as part of the personal care service, said Dennis, Study could pinpoint ways to avoid coho By CHRISTIANA WLENS RESULTS FROM an inde- pendent study to monitor the recreational fishery catch on the lower Skeena River Should be available at the end of this month, The survey, led by Jim Culp of the local sport fishery advisory committee, look place from July 27 to Aug. 8 and covered angling activity from Ferry Island in Terrace to the Andesite Bar, west of the Exstew tribulary. The goal is to determine how anglers can avoid coho hooked. The number of anglers at each location was recorded along with the number and type of fish kept or released back into the river. Fisheries manager David Einarson said il’s really too early to tell how many cohy anglers caught this season. Einarson added the coho. run is about two weeks late, with the first coho spotted at the Tyee test fishery July 22 this year. ‘But they’re coming in some abundance now,’ he said, adding Tyee coho counts tend to jump errati- cally four to five days after high tides, making it dif- ficult to predict trends this early in the annual run. Einarson said the coho seem relatively healthy with an encouraging index above most years this decade. The reading, he added, is similar to that of 1990, making the first and last year of this decade two of the most promising years for upper Skeena coho, The study used $46,000 from the Fisheries and Oceans’ Selective Fisheries Program and ended one day before the Aug. 9 angling SKEENA VALLEY EMERGENCY ? Mike Beausoleil of the community services society said getting rid of cleaning could cause problems for those who need them. Clienls may not be able to afford to hire a private cleaner, he said, which will put ‘‘more onus on the fam- ily.”’ Beausoleil said his society may have to ley off one or two stalf who did the cleaning work. Doing away with. cleaning services is not unique to ‘the northwest, Dennis said, and has been done in many regions in B.C, and across Canada. Personal care, respite care for caregivers and profes- sional functions, such as physiotherapy, will still be pro- vided for clients. "We want to keep people healthy and out of facilities as much as possible,” Dennis said.
