AG - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, September 16, 1998 CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag Council criticized for market position An Open Letter to Ken Veldman and Terrace City Council: As a supporter of the farmer’s market, I benefit enormously by having access to crafts, products and produce supplicd, in many cases, by my neighbonrs. Because of the length of time at this loca- tion and the popularity of the market, out- of-community buyers and vendors travel to Terrace for participation. Council’s intent to move the location will in all probability result in the closure of the markei through lack of support because that arca that they have mentioned is not as easily accessible as the present location. Why does the city council want to tamper with something, that is successful, and has the support of a multitude of voters. The farmer’s market has been at this site for 15 years with both participants and customers benefiting. The present location, being central, allows walking access from the surrounding residential areas, with many citizens starting their Saturday with this function, As for site utilization (or council’s per- ceived lack of it) the city benefils during the winter, as the market area is used to stockpile snow. Without this site, extra costs would have to allocated for longer transport to another usable location — if one could be found. Terrace already has the distinction of hav- ing one of the highest tax bases in the pro- vince and [ don’t like having public monies for special interest groups such as the skateboarders and/or rollerbladers. Projects such as that Which are publicly funded can lead to the liability of the city in lawsuits from any resulting accidents or in- juries that occur on city-supported sites. Which special interest groups are the city council bowing towards when they move (or shut down) the farmer’s market? Is it the touchy-feel good vote getter of youth support as previously pushed by the Vancouver-like yuppies ofa skateboard and rollezblade park? Or something more prosaic such as a de- velopment to complement the property directly behind the current farmer’s market site, This elected council is again ignoring the wishes of the community as this is not the first attack by them on the market, Previous attempts were beaten back with a great deal of vehemence by community support, even to the extent of mentioning 2,600 voter support attendance for one day’s market. I find this type of single mindedness on their part objectionable, as they appear to have a self-approved plan in motion and will not listen to any but themselves. Stefka Haigh, Terrace, B.C. Move somebody else Dear Sir: The town square, better known as the farmer's market, is in trouble — again. Sixty entrepreneurs gather for four hours every Saturday moming. This provides entertainment for possibly §,000 citizens (25,000 citizens, including cily hall, couldn’t care less), The city leaders say, ‘“We gotta stop this. The people are enjoying themselves too much, They laugh. The congestion is just awful. We bad a complaint.’’ ‘And that terrible guy with the hore No outcry _ Dear Sir: Your Sept. 9 paper carried David Maclsaac a front page story about | followed led him - some guy who thinks he’s : Michael the Archangel and straight to the three women who were Intersection. evicted, Who cares, . ‘Two years ago, On page A10, a guy in Dri deeds tet . . haddi e Kitimal is charged with hav- talon sout be ing child pomography, This — | bereftsc biting should af been the front | fewest page news.
