A6 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, December 4, 1996 You must help us An open letter to; Helmut Giesbrecht, MLA Dear Sir: It appears you have no input into any de- cision made or are totally unable to get the . message across as to the problems we are facing at the present time in the north, We have had numerous committees going around the province asking questions about Forest Renewal, parks, Nisga’a settlement and Alcan to name a few. I understand that those talks have generated a probable money grab of $400 million by your bud- dies from Forest Renewal, the cancellation of the Alcan agreement, in-camera agree- ments With the natives and thousands of acres of land set aside for parks that people cannot reach if they wanted to. These four matters are of uppermost im- portance to our area. Where were you when alt the talks were taking place, you certain- ly did not speak owt for us nor have you de- fended this riding in any way. You agreed to the money grab, which is money taken from the hard work of your constituents to cover up the short falls of your friends in Victoria, Your constituents will never see any of that money. I agree that small parcels of land should be set aside for parks that could be used by everyone, not huge parks with massive areas that are accessible only by a few. Many of our parks can only be accessed by plane or helicopter, 1am also very concerned about our health care system. Our hospital has not had a budget in four or five years except for a $4,000 increase this year. This would be DE a) CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD Mail Bag scarcely enough to pay ils hydro bill. In 1980 our population was about 16,000 people, now it’s about 21,000°pecple-which ~: is about a 31 per cent increase in population and our hospital has been reduced to 52 beds,- a Many hours are put in’by volunteers from our area to rajse- thousands of dollars’ for hespital equipment which the government could not afford. Do you not.sce this arca_ being shortchanged by. this government, Some people are being sent home after surgery with no one to look after them. How do you expect these people. to recover? a The: school district amalgamation is not working out. And did we really not have anyone around this area who could have’ mediated the matter to settlement instead of spending tax dollars to get a. professional whip from down south to come up here and settle matters they know nothing-about? I am asking you to please try to help us get some of these things looked into. We need your help before it’s too tale. | ~ Jim LeCleir, Terrace, B.C, More on wolves Dear Sir: I'm writing in response to Ellen Hansen's Nov. 6 letter about my dogs being at- tacked by wolves, Our expe- Tience is that wolves will Kill animals no matter what you try tc do to stop them. We rent 75 acres of land in Dutch Valley where we have a legal barbed wire fence. The riverfront isn’t fenced as it would erode. We've last a cow and two calves to wolves. We also have 25 acres in a page-wire fence that’s four feet high. They can’t go through, but they can go over. In. about four years, we've lost 31 sheep and one goat. Ellen Hansen said that dogs in heat may be one rea- son for a wolf to attack them. I have two female dogs and both are spayed and still they got attacked. Three wolves out of a pack of seven were on top of one of my dogs. 1 fired over them to keep them away. Wolves will roam far and wide to get food — hundreds of miles. They feed off of dead salmon in the river. You won't see foxes in the Kalum Lake area because the wolves have eaten them. My point is that wolves will do anything to get food, despite what Ellen Hansen has to say about how to keep a farm. Ted Hamer, Terrace, B.C Secrecy is wrong AB open letter to: Dan Miller, Minister of Municipal Affairs Dear Sir: I refer to a newspaper clipping of land transactions between the City of Terrace council and a secret poten- Hal developer. As to the issues you have brought up relaling to poverty, you ought to be aware that the causes of poverty are seldom self-inflicted. There are many rea- sans a person may be impoverished — literacy level, education, marilal breakdown, unexpected death of a spouse, ilincss, depression, unemployment, etc, It would be impossible for a person in poverty to _“‘spend hundreds of dollars’? on the items you supeest.
