—————E=E=SE EO B4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, January 19, 1994 Don’t let weight fears © keep you from quitting AVE ‘YOU thought about quitting smok- ing? Putting it off be- cause you're scared you'll gain weight? You may want to keep in mind that even if you grain weight, it’s less health tisk than the smoking is. And it’s likely you'll lose any weight gain within a. short time ariyways. The evidence. is mounting for reasons to quit. Now you need not only consider your own health, you must also consider the health of those you live and work with. A major study in the U.S. has shown that non-smoking women who live with smokers had a 30 per cent higher chance of getting lung cancer. And children who live with smokers have more respiratory disorders like asthma, bronchitis, and colds. The message here is that if you can’t quit, at least smoke outside, But the best sclution is to quit. Smokers who quit usually gain a few pounds, but for very scientific reasons - not because of “Tack of will-power. -NUTRITION NOTES” § GERRY KASTEN On average, smokers gain only about 2-3 pounds. But for most people, this weight is usually shed after a smoke-free year. [f you’re a dieter as well as a smoker though, you’re more likely to gain about 12 pounds, It seems that dieters fain more because they have traditionally used smoking to help control er- ralic eating habits, and because dicting wreaks havoc with their metabolism. Once again I have to say it: the more often you dici, the heavier NEW: a ARRIVALS . | WEEKLY! you're likely to end up. Why Do quitters gain? The nicotine in cigarettes increases - your metabolic rate, which keeps your weight unnaturally low for your genetic make-up, When you quit, the extra calories you’re no longer burning may be stored as fat. Smoking dulls the taste buds and masks the flavour of foods. Quitting takes you back into the wonderful world of taste, and this can initially result in overeating. Quitters are also under the stress of nicotine withdrawal. For - some, stress leads to overeating, especially since it’s a way to keep their idle hands and mouth busy. How can quitters lose? ‘Bat three meals a day. Skip- ping meals will lead to overeat- ing. Having regular meals will help support your metabolism. Focus on vegetables, fruits, and grains. Have just enough milk and meat (or alternates) for health. Plan healthy snacks. Keep them low in fat, and high in oe A MAJOR TURNING POINT IN THE HISTORY OF HUMANITY Baha'u'llah a nn Raa a ae, re es Sei ae en ie, itn its ie ies Een, ~ Slumber Sandwich Specials From Around The World (served with ethnic soup of the couniry) Available 11:00 am to 5:0O pm Monday...Mexican Docket Sandwich Tuna, cheese, lelluce, tomato & peppers. Don’t do anything else while you're eating! Studies show you eat more when you're disiracied by something else. Be active! Activity boosts your lowered metabolism, makes you feel better about yourself, lowers stress, and will keep you busy! If activity is difficult for you, get advice from your doctor or a fitness professional at your local Rec Centre, Things will get easier as your lungs get healthier. Cut back on caffeine. Smokers metabolize caffeine mor quickly than non-smokers. Two cups of coffee will feel. like 5 cups within days of kicking the ‘ habit. So on tap of nicotine with- drawal, you'll be on a caffeine high. Tuis will make it harder for you to stick to your resolve. Expect a little weight gain, This is normal. Good luck! Othe fastnchons iippty, No Heat purcha kon, For personal use DL #9662 Facts about KCP Number 14 in a series answering the questions most often raised with Alcan about the Kemano Completion Project Why was Alcan’s KCP agreement with the federal fisheries department under investigation by the © RCMP? When we first heard rumours that such an investigation had taken place, we were astounded. A future protection plan for the Nechako River had been developed and unanimously agreed to by fisheries scientists representing all of the parties (the federal and provincial governments and Alcan) with an independent observer/facilitator present. That person was David Strangway, president of the University of British Columbia. The report of the scientific group and the subsequent work of the Nechako Fisheries Conservation Program are all public knowledge. We couldn't imagine what had been investigated by the RCMP or why. Until Alcan obtained the file under the Access to Information Act, we knew only what we had read in the newspapers; no company employee was ever approached i in the course of the investigation. The RCMP file revealed that the investigation had been undertaken in 1991 at the request of Jim Fulton who was then the Member of Parliament for Skeena. Mr. Fulton's request was based on his assertion that there had been a muzzling of expert witnesses and political interference in connection with the 1987 agreement. The RCMP’s investigating officer stated in his final report that "the allegations made by Mr, Fulton were proven to be unfounded, and therefore the file is concluded here.” He also makes it clear that Mr. Fulton agreed with the contents of the report and “expressed satisfaction with the action taken." Occasionally investigations conclude that "insufficient evidence" was found to justify further action. The investigator in this case stated that he found no evidence to support Mr, Fulton’s claims. Case closed. : Accusations of wrongdoing make juicy gossip, but there is no substance to them as part of the background to KCP. With the start of technical hearings on the project this month, we hope the way has been cleared for discussion of genuine issues.
