DOCTOR CHARGES COLLUSION New cancer therapy suppressed By JAMES LEECH A Toronto physician, Dr. Jerry Green, recently wrote Dr. Robert A. Mustard, head of a cancer fund-" raising campaign, charging collusion among the medical profession, the government, the Canadian Cancer Society and the drug companies, to suppress the hew non-toxic cancer treatments which do not assure _phar- maceutical profits.. He said that while ‘new non- toxic therapies,’’ such as Laetrile, vitamin C, hydrazine and BCG are suppressed, anti-cancer drugs and “radioactive materials make “huge profits,” and ‘keep the operating rooms churning.” “The biggest quacks,”’ Dr. Green charged, ‘‘are among. the Establishment doctors, who push these very harmful treatment methods that usually can’t work. except as a patch-up.”’ While he admitted he had no scientific proof for a cure for cancer, he referred in an interview to two U.S. experiments favorable to Laetrile which were suppressed. This particular treatment (Laetrile) has long aroused con- troversy. Once manufactured in Canada under the sponsorship of the McNaughton Foundation in Montreal, the Establishment had it . banned in 1964. In the U.S.A., a monumental battle waged over the years to give the treatment the benefit of testing. Among those insisting on such tests was Dean Burk, Ph_D., biochemistry, and for more than 30 years research head of the Cytochemistry Department, National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Md. \ Dr. Burk has written ‘Ap- proaches to Tumor Chemo- therapy”’ and other books, and has been a guest research worker at the USSR Academy of Sciences, Moscow. ““Most physicians,” scientific evidence, Laetrile-using he said, adhering to “find five to PACIFIC TRIBUNE 40th ANNIVERSARY BANQUET RENFREW COMMUNITY CENTRE 2929 E. 22nd AVE., VANCOUVER JUNE 14, 1975 6:30 p.m. DANCE 9 p.m. $5.00 — $3.00 OAP Tickets now available at P.T. This is not the opinion of Dr. Hans Nieper, of Hanover; Federal Republic of Germany, one of ‘its foremost advocates. Appearing at the Second Annual Convention of the Cancer Control Society, cen- tred in Los Angeles, he outlined his “regimen’’ using Laetrile, which is variously called also Amygdalin, and Vitamin B17. Dr. Nieper is secretary of the German Society for Medical Tumor Therapy. He completely detailed his methods for the convention delegates, including the im- portance of nutrition, and added: ”... we are so far unable to satisfactorily ‘control malignant: disease. The fact that we will be able to cure about one-third of. all cancer patients is not satisfying, | and I would say no one doubts that surgery, radiation and toxic chemotherapy deforms what it performs, and we very often combine it with our regimen. However, in my opinion, all these devices so far known do not satisfy us for the control of cancer. The -z ree most important approach control will be early detection and profiting from early detection. A non-toxic protective treatment has then to be started and continued for . an unlimited time.” Dr. Nieper, also a. biochemist, told this writer some three years ago that he foresaw big im- provements in non-toxic sub- stances within five to seven years. From his Los Angeles report it appears some effective new elements have already been in- troduced. “About four weeks ago,’’ he told the Los Angeles gathering in Sept. 1974, ‘““Amygdalin appeared of- ficially as a drug in Germany (FRG) for the treatment of malignancies. However, only in its activated form with certain fac- tors, which enhance the respiration rate of the tumor cells and therefore make Amygdalin more powerful. Everyone in our country will be able to obtain it even for social insurance. This activated Amygdalin, in my opinion, means a certain step forward in our ability to control malignant disease.”’ He paid tribue to related research by other scientists in other countries, including Dr. Manfred von Ardenne of Dresden, German Democratic Republic. This is a familiar theory to those who urge the complete above- board testing of Amygdalin (Lae- trile). It was delineated by John Beard, D.Sc., a Scotsman; in his book: ‘“‘The Enzyme Treatment of Cancer,” published in 1911! It was on the basis of Beard’s theory that biochemist Ernst Krebs Jr. of the U.S.A., developed the substance known as Laetrile: About 1950 he perceived thal Leatrile, refined from apricot pits: with which ‘he had conducted successful anti-cancer ex periments on mice, contained a! amount of cyanide, safely bound i! the Laetrile molecules. Hi research convinced him that the cyanide should be released by enzymes present at the site 0 malignant cells; the free cyanide should then destroy the cancel cells, unprotected as normal cé are, by the enzyme rhodanese. | In extreme oversimplificatio! | that is what a national newspape! in the U.S.A. claims 20,000 U-: citizens are using illegally.
