What kind of tree is that?

B As you go for a walk through the forest this season, have a look
around and see Just how many different kinds of trees prow in the
8 Pacific Northwest. Here are same clues to determine the species.

CONIFERS - Trees that bear cones, Most conifers also have necdle like

branches.

: DECIDUOUS - These are trees that losc their leaves every Fall, Most

deciduous trees have broud Ieaves.

w BARK - The outer layer (skin) of the tree. Bark varies greatly between

species and Is a helpful key to determining whit species you
are viewing.

: LEAVES - The needle-like leaves of conifer wees are another key to tree

identification, For example, the needles of Western Red
Cedar (Thuja piicata) look more like scales, than needles,
und ure cusily spotted. Pine trees have needles that grow in
groups of 2, 3, or §.. fn this urea, we have the Lodgepaole
Pine (Pinus contorta), which has needles in bundles of 2.

CONES - Cones also vary with tree species. Look for a todgepole pine

cone, Tt has very thick seales with points on the ends.
Western Hemlock (Tsuga Heterophylla) bas very small cones
that grow in clusters on the tree,
