B10 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 11, 2001 Shames’ snow summons Swedish skiers, boarders By BETTY BARTON OUR awesome winter con- ditions are attracting visit- ors to the northwest from as far away as Sweden this season, Swedes Olaf, Thomas and Lars arrived in Terrace on March 13 after travel- ling in a rented 4x4 truck fram Calgary: Luckily, Thomas felt most comfortable driving on the right side of the road, so he chauffeured the whole 3000 kilometres they travelled to get-here. On the Way, they skied, boarded and telemarked at Lake Louise, Marmot Basin in Jasper, Powder King near Prince George, and Ski Smithers. They detoured via Kit- wanga to Stewart . and Hyder and then’ ventured on the hazardous Aiyansh connector to-Terrace. From here, the three spent twa glorious days at Shames, with fresh powder and sporadic sunshine. The first. day, they stayed within the ski area boundary experiencing ail the runs, from Panhandler to Deliverance. From the Deliverance, vantage point, they could see the snow sloughing off the far slopes of the back bowl, and wisely decided to link up with a local if they were going to venture that far. They were impressed with the snow conditions, the courtesy and hospital- ity extended them by fel- low skiers and boarders and anticipated their sec-: ond day touring in terrain thal “looks great”. Olaf, Thomas and Lars had met in Sweden a few years ago at Kittel Fjall, which means high moun- tain with snow on top. “The grooviest small Swedish ski area for ad- venture skiing,” described Olaf, a snowboarder and telemark skier. Olaf is a design engin- eer in Lerum, Sweden and also owns a smal! compa- ny which makes snow- board and telemark cloth- ing. He explained that he only works 60 per cent of full-time with 14 weeks of holiday annually and Fri- days off so that he can tra- vel and ski, He’s been to BC once before, skied in New Zealand and in May, plans to be at Streun, Norway for opening day of their glac- ier skiing.
