MP candidate relying on his experience EXPERIENCE is what Vancouver Island MP Bill Gilmour says he would bring to Skeena if he wins the Alliance nomination race here. The two-term Reform MP for Nanaimo-Alberni has served in Ottawa for - Seven years and has been his party’s critic for envir- onment.and public works. Despite that record Gil- mour failed to win the Ca- nadian Alliance nomina- lion in his tiding in June and is now here seeking the party’s nomination in Skeena. MP. Mike Scott an- ‘nounced in the summer he isn’t running again. “My caucus colleages and party whip came to me and said f should con- sider Skeena because we knew Mike wasn’t running,” Gilmour said. He said he also met with the constituency as- sociation here who he said wanted him in the race. Gilmour attributes his _lass to “complacency” and says his pro-life opponent signed up his entire church as.members to stack: the meeting and win the nomi- nation. “A great number. of my supporters felt [ was a shoe-in,” he said. Gilmour was criticized by some constituents after he opted into the parlia- mentary pension plan he and other Reformers had previously condemned. “Tt was an issue in my riding,” he admits. “I don’t think it’s an issue here be- cause they were telling WISE QUYERS READ THE LEGAL COPY. ‘Loasa a new 2001 F-150 XLT SuperCab 4x4 4.6L V8 wath auto fansmss:on, all torrain fivas, bmited stp reat axle, monthty paynian! of $299 based on a 24 month lease from Ferd Credit to quahhad rotad fasseas, on approved crodd. Gilmour’s pension is presently worth a total of $467,775 or $19,655 per year, according to the Ca- nadian Taxpayers Federa- tion, He said the pension plan has been partially re- formed and is no longer as tich as it was. Gilmour is expecting some people to brand him as a parachute candidate. “There will be people who will take issue with it,” he said. “It’s not as if I’m a candidate from Tor- onto, Then they would have an issue.” Gilmour says his exper- ience with coastal fishing and forestry issues, and his previous work experience in this riding as a timber cruiser for Macmillan Bloedel should put those fears to rest. Da The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, Cctober 18, 2000 AT Election believed imminent Alliance poised to fast-track candidate selection vote ALLIANCE OFFICIALS are making plans to speed up the selection of a candidate if Prime Minister Jean Chretien, as widely anticipated, calls an election for Nov, 27, The original nomination date of Nov, 27-will be moved ahead. to Oct. 29, suys Skeena Alliance constituency association presi- dent Lorne Sexton. - “We're ready for Jean,” said Sexton. - Chretien is expected to ask Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson to dissolve Parliament on Oct. 22, setting a 36-day clock in motion for a Nov. 27 vote. But a sped up selection pro- cess means there’s no time. for mail in ballots in order to in- clude as many Alliance mem- bers as possible from more re- mote locations and no time for a travelling ballot box to the ri- you, ding’s major centres, said Sex- ton. These are in the works if the elec- tion isn’t called and the scheduled nomination meeting of Nov. 25 goes ahead. The party will instead hold one large nomination. meeting here in Terrace on Oct. 29-if Chretien does- call a Nov, 27 election, ‘Either way, Sexton’s expecting an active race for the nomination given that three candidates have been approved, papers for another were just submitted last week and one more person is about to file very soon. “| definitely think it will go to one more ballot,” he said. The constituency association board will decide this Saturday what ballot methed will be used, Candidates much receive more than 50 per cent of the vote and this can happen in two ways. One features the last place candi- date dropping off after each ballot until a person gets to the 50 per cent-plus level, Or, voters will have just one bal- lot but it will be one in which they are asked to vole for the candidates in order of preference. After the first counting, the per- son. who finishes last is removed and _the second choices from these ballots are. distributed among. the remaining candidates, This process goes on until a win- ner is selected, Former Stewart mayor Andy Bur- ton, Thornhill resident: Ted Wyatt and Alliance MP Bill Gilmour from Vancouver Island are the three ap- proved candiclates so far. Gilmour is running in Skeena after losing his-own riding's nomi- nation race earlier this year. The most recent filer is Alan For- syth, a Hazelton resident, He was also a candidate in 1993 for the former Reform party, but lost oul to Mike Scott, Scott went on to win the riding in 1993 and in 1997 but has decided not to run again. tuted 695-6384 CLEAR SALE SAVINGS STOREWIDE Keep your investment in Terrace It's simple - 3 years, fully or partially redeemable, ie Terrace & District Cradit Union Available for a limited time Terrace & District Cradit Union 4650 Lazelle Avenue www.tdcu.com guaranteed investment at 5.75% 635-7282 SNOWBLOWERS Toro Snowblowers from 4.5 Hp. single stage up to and including 12 Hp. 2 stage, 32” cut, power shift and electric start Crowd pleasers. ..... “29 ~ 2001 F-150 XLT SuperCab 4x4 /month* 24/ma. lease with $5,725 down security deposit waived "ee Ditto. 4.6L.
