RCMP are looking for
three male 16 to 17-year-
old youth responsible for
smashing a pane of glass
at Northern Savings Cre~
dit Union late Sunday,
Oct, 18.

Witnesses’ saw the
youth, who wore jeans
and backpacks, running
north down Sparks Street
around. 2 a.m. that even-
ing. Nothing was stolen.

Hawes tried but failed at

an Oct. 12 council meeting
to block a $17,000 city

grant for further develop-
ment of the (Onion Lake ;

cross-cauntry ski facilities,

The money is the city’s
share of a total $50,600
grant from the Kitimat-Sti-
kine regional district-to the
Kitimat Cross Country Ski
Club,

The club wants to build
a large daylodge there, get
power into the area and
make olher improvements.

The $50,000 grant is
conditional on the club
getling a $200,000 mille-
nnium grant from the pro-
vince fo go toward the
total $419,000 project,

“It seems like an awful
lot of money to give to one
group outside our com-
munity,” Hawes said of
the $17,000 city portion.

She added that cross-
country skiing is to some
degree an “exclusionary”
activity dependent on
transportation and equip-
ment. ;

Councillor David Hull
said it’s no more exclu-
sionary than a second
sheet of ice or Shames
Mountain ski hill, which
the city and district want
to help by forgiving an old
loan.

Council approved the
prant by a 4-1 vote, with
Hawes opposed,

Theatre

wants grant
THE city is being asked
to contribute $30,000 to
Operale the REM Lee
Theatre in 2000, plus
$10,000 to run it to the end
of this year.

The numbers came to
council from the new
Community Recreation
Facilities Socicty that the
city helped set up.

Councillors reacted’ at
their Oct, 12 meeting,
saying $30,000 a year is.a

little more than they ¢x--

pected to pay. The issue is
to be debated further when
the formal agreement with
the school board comes to
council for ratification.

The society is to man-
age the community use
part of the theatre, while
the school district is: to
continue to manage the -
theatre for use within
school hours.
