December 1990 will mark the first Intake of students who can com- plete their peneral Nursing course (two years) at NWCC. Hospitals in the area are very supportive and excited, says nursing coordinator Joanne Thomson. Betty Barton ’ The nursing class presently at- tending NWCC will transfer to B.C.1.T. in Burnaby for their second year. The new course at NWCC will consist of. seven 12-week trimesters spread over two and one third years. The class beginning this December will complete the course in March of 1993. Upon gradua- tion, each nurse will serve a three-month - perceptorship (working one-on-one with a registered nurse). Joanne Thom- - son says, ‘‘It’s where everything comes together.” Chris Andrews from the Col- lege of New Caledonia has been hired as a project worker to start March. 4 researching the percep- torship program. She will com- pile statistics on patient admis- sions in the hospitals in the Northwest, do patient profiles, and determine the number of students who could be handled for practicums and for the three- month perceptorship i in each in- stitution. _ First year students will prob- ably do their practicums (two days per week) in Mills Memorial Hospital in Terrace and Kitimat General Hospital. Second year siudents will have the broader experience of Prince Rupert Regional Hospital, Bulk- ley Valley Hospital in Smithers, the nursing station in the Nass Valley, Wrinch Memorial .in Hazelton, occupational health nursing in industrial settings such as Alcan, and public health nursing. After the perceptorship, the nurses are eligible to write the exams for the RNABC (Regis- tered Nurses’ Association of B.C.). The trimester system pro- vides greater flexibility to start and stop if family responsibili- ties or finances dictate the need to quit.
