— Jam probably one of the few “people in Terrace who’s never - been out. deliberately hoping to. see a Kermadei bear,-until the © ‘other day. I did go out deliber- -ately and I did see a Kermodei. . ‘I.did not even have to go to the dump. __ “The place I went to looked a " lot better than the dump; it was. right‘on Agar Ave. Mildred . . .Hiort’s son-in-law Horst Herrmann was busy carving a bear out of a piece of cotton- . wood. Cottonwood is just the _ right color for a Kermodei. _Horst’s specialty is powersaw carving, and by the time I got there, most of it was done. Horst has carved most of his life, but it is during the last 10 years that he had taken wood- carving seriously. Powersaw ~ ‘carving has long been popular, but we have not seen much of it up here. Horst is not the on- ly artist in the family — his” wife Orlean is an accomplished painter. She has her own studio and teaches painting to children and adults. ” Orlean went to high schoo in Terrace in 1949, Mr. Laird “was the principal at that time. - Later she worked at the hospital and off and on at the - corner snackbar. She married here and raised four children. . ' ” She also had. a clothing store here for a while, named ‘“Or- lean’s Fashions’’. She is remarried now to Horst ‘Herrmann, and both are mak- "ing their living as artists in Aldergrove. They were up here on holidays to see the family. . Looking at the dates on everybody’s name tags at the Skeenaview Reunion, it oc- curred to me that most people - worked there for a considerable length of time. . Joe Wideman came to Ter- race in 1954, His intentions ~ were not to stop in Terrace for ‘too long, as he was on his way to Alaska. He met a friend here who encouraged him to - apply for a job up at the Home. He went to see Ted Skillicorn, filled in an applica- tion and was told that there. _ ‘were a big stack of applications and not to expect to be called soon, This was in the morning - and:at three o’clock in the afternioon, he was told that if the wanted the job, it was his. -. He started working July 1, _ 1954, Joe was still thinking of going to Alaska, but the days turned into weeks and the weeks into months and the . ‘months into years. A person ~ Joe remembers working with “on the wards was Jim Catton. Jim‘Catton later opened up: Catton’s Studio and sold ‘cameras and film and did ~ photography. He never got to go to Alaska and _ maybe never will, unless they. have some good horseshoe ~ tournaments'up there sometime. July.24, 1989 was the day. . that Bert and Jean Spangler celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary. It is also the 10th | year that they have celebrated . their anniversary in Terrace. - - The Spanglers are from Enemclaw, Washington. For years they had listened to peo-. ple talk about the terrific — fishing in the Skeena, and in July; 1980, they decided to. check it out. The fishing was so good that they have come back every year since. They’ve en- joyed it here tremendously and made a lot of friends. . Walter and Blackie McCon- — nell are two such friends. Every year on the day of their arrival, dhe’ McConnells have them over -k for Walter’s homemade chili. _ The Spanglers have caught a lot of nice fish over the years. The biggest they caught this year was 65 lbs. The biggest ever caught by them: was 72 © lbs; I asked Jean if she went along every time her husband went fishing, and her answer was, “‘He better not leave me at home.’” She does whatever ‘néeds to:be done when a per- * gon'goes fishing, cxccpt run the boat: that, she-leaves to her _ Wisbands ” As-all good things come to _ an‘end, so have their holidays and they are on their way back - to Enemelaw.
