The perfect companion for fightback The subscription drive—in many ways, it’s as important a task as any in the Solidarity effort against the Socred bills. Since Operation Solidarity and the Solidarity Coalition were formed to bring a halt to the provincial government’s broadside against trade union, democratic and human rights, the Tribune has Tesponded by commiting extra effort to support the fightback. Thousands of extra copies week after week have been distributed by volunteers, bringing the Tribune’s unique analyses and coverage to new readers. And the ready acceptance of the working class press at the huge protest marches and rallies, at meetings of the coalitions and on the picket line in the recent strike have confirmed the validity of the Tribune in the growing struggle. é The paper’s role will be no less valid in the weeks to come, as the task of monitoring the government’s actions in implementing the Conditions of the recent truce with Solidarity becomes all important. But it’s one thing to bring the most recent issue to those working to change the Socred legislation—it’s another job altogether to en- Sure that the Tribune continues to reach people afterwards. That’s why the supporters should give top priority to the 1983 Subscription drive. A subscription guarantees readers that they’ll receive the Tribune’s perspective weekly, whether or not there’s extra copies or Mass distributions. And best of all, during our drive a new sub can be picked up for the price of $2, which pays for three months of home delivery. So far 75 new readers have shown their appreciation by taking out 4 new sub. But we want to encourage those hundreds of others who have been reading the Tribune to make that extra commitment and get the paper weekly. It’s the perfect companion in the Solidarity fightback. WA U.S. peace group sets 10-day action The growing peace movement in the United States is turning its sights on the 1984 presidential elec- tion, a visiting U.S. peace activist told a Vancouver audience Satur- day. . “There is a large movement in the United States being built around the effort to get Reagan out,’’ Michela Terrazino, represen- ting the Northern California Coali- tion Against Pershing and Cruise, said at a public meeting sponsored by the B.C. Peace Council. This can be accomplished by tur- ning out the vote of millions of Americans — the poor and the minorities — who traditionally are not represented in U.S. voting results, said Terrazino, a keynote speaker during the council’s two- day annual conference last weekend. The coalition, formed last year and now involving 150 member organizations including trade union, peace and community groups, turned out 14,000 to the San Fransico rally observing the Oct. 22 International Day of Pro- test. For the immediate future, the group plans ‘‘10 days of protest’ beginning Nov. 20, said Terrazino. Instead of working towards ‘‘one big protest,’”’ the coalition will be travelling to small communities for a series of local actions, she said. She supported, but cautioned against placing too much emphasis on, votes in the House of Represen- tatives. Recently, Congress voted for a nuclear freeze following the ballot initiative which carried in eight out of nine states — but two weeks later, the same Congress | freed funds for construction of the deadly MX intercontinental missile, she noted. Real disarmament efforts come from the growing peace move- ment, she asserted: ‘‘People achieved a halt in the war in Viet Nam, and we can do the same thing here.” The two-day conference of workshops and plenary sessions drew some 85 delegates from 28 organizations around B.C. The delegates gave a nod to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau for his recent world peace initiative, but noted in a resolution that ‘‘as evidence of his sincerity in the peace mission,’ Trudeau should cancel the planned cruise missile tests and leclare Canada a nuclear-weapons free zone. The conference elected long- time peace and _ international solidarity worker Dr. James Foulkes as president. pe ah age a 5 ace tae a ta te ei | SPE SESE IE CE HEE PERE SOE IRS ES XMAS SPECIAL COPE Auction & Fundraiser (& Pub Night) Sat., Nov. 19 - Vancouver Indian Centre 1607 E.
