C. Huber FLOAT REPORT MAYDAY t has caused cons derab e prob ems each year for both the Mayday Committee and works yard. These problems from storage and loss of use of vehicles for the works range yards and crews to high costs and availability of vehicles for the Mayday Th i s un i i I I Committee. 1981 the old self propelled float was deleted as it' limited capacity became a safety and maintenance problem. For 1982 and 1983 a new trai ier was built for carrying heavy equi pment and was loaned to Mayday as a f lost base. Money to bui Id thl s tra ier (approx imatei y $ 5,000.00) came out of the 1981 equipment maintenance budget. To date this trailer has not been used for it's original purpose, not because it is not needed but due to the cost and trouble of removing and installing float superstructure. Construction cost of trailer, loss of use of trailer and to~ing of vehicle are hidden costs In i public works departments. feel if Mayday is to continue this use, that a suitable up to date unit be built, where cost of construction and maintenance are prorated over expected life use. This could best be done unit was classed as part of our fleet with an assigned account number. The costs could be covered by capital at budget time or money transferred from Mayday budget, either of which would be paid 'into the equipment maintenanCe and equipment reserve budgets each year. recommend a self propelled unit, designed for present and future needs. (This would mean the towing vehicle would not lose time to .work crews as it would not be decorated.) There is a truck coming up for replacement on the 1984 budget, as it's chassis and drive system are in good shape, it could be reconstructed into a float base. The body of this truck is rusted out very bad and would cost too much to become a towing vehicle. As the body is not required for a self propelled unit and the value of the truck is very low, feel we can gain the most out of it by turning it into a float. born by I i'he I I JAN page two Mayday Float Report If the Mayday committee could give us specifications of size estimate be done though engineering and myself, to see if thiscould self propelled unit would be worth while. and load, an Respectfully Submitted J.C. Running gear is in good shape (minor repairs needed) and would be suitable for float base. If, however, the float is to stay on trailer (9054) as in 1983, then a replacement for 9054 is required. Cost approx. $ 6,000.00. If float. is discontinued then 1202 would be auctioned and 1204 could take its place as welding shop truck.
