A6é - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, June 11, 2003 The buck could stop right here f Dear Sir: it is with interest that I have been following a recent news CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD item detailing differences that have arisen between Starbucks coffee and HaidaBucks Cafe of the Queen Charlotte Islands. It seems that these differences arise out of the choice of busi- ness names — HaidaBucks vs. Starbucks. Starbucks contends that the other party has taken something near and dear, that being a portion of their corporate identity. HaidaBucks contends that “Bucks” relates to First Nations males and Haida is the nation from which the bucks in question originate. At first glance, this is a trivial matter, but when two parties differ in opinion, there are two options. Mediation or litigation. Starbucks has said that they wish to resolve this dispute “informally and amicably.” This is one of the best descriptions of the mediation process that I have No way to play Dear Sir: On Monday, May 26 I witnessed threats of violence on a soccer field. I watched [5-year-old Kitimat young men ptay 14-year-old Terrace men. The older team resorted to bully tactics as they could not win the game otherwise. The coaching was non-existent. If this is what you call soccer, save your money. Your kids can learn what I saw on the streets, Coaching kids to play without discipline will surely put an end to all the gains you worked for. I suggest action of a kind to stop such things before it gets out of hand and someone gets injured. Last minute referees cannot be helped but bad coach- ing can and this kind of coaching is unacceptable. Congratulations to the Terrace young men who showed discipline and acted professionally. Bill McAllister, Terrace, B.C. He had a great time Dear Sir: I would like to gratefully acknowledge the hospitality given to the numerous stream keeper groups who de- scended on Terrace for the Northern Exposure confer- ence on the May long weekend, What a beautiful part of British Columbia you all reside in. Volunteerism shown was bar none. The artwork in your local art gallery and the Heritage Park tour and barbecue were some of ‘the many high- lights of our tour, it made the 16 hour bus trip from Van- couver much more worthwhile. I and many of the partic- ipants, all agreed that we would come back and visit the area in greater detail in the near future. And a very big round of applause is due to Jim Culp the volunteer award winner, who, by the way, was in- volved in stream keeping activities back in 1952 in the Coquitlam area. ii ied And finally a special thank you to the volunteers we did not see who were working behind the scenes, and to Brenda Ramsay who ccordinated it all. AS a mediator in private practice, I have offered my mediation services, pro bono, to both sides in an effort to see if this dispute may be resolved amicably and quick- ly. That is the essence of mediation. I hope that Starbucks and HaidaBucks can set the stage to show that in fact there ig another way.
