Bd - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, December 04, 2002 An inspiring visit | HERE ‘'N- THERE YVONNE MOEN EARLIER THIS summer, | had the great privilege to spend some time with Maud Bevan, who had re- turned for a visit. Maud Beverly Bevan was born alt Kitselas in 1945, Mrs. Hudson, who deli- vered many of the babies at Kitselas, was the mid- wife. Maud’s parents were very well known and loved by the people of the com- munity: Flora and Gunnar Edlund. Her sister, Isabelle Mc- Kee, was born in 1938 and brother Mel Bevan in 1941. Like Maud, they were also born at Kitselas with Mrs. Hudson attending at their births. Maud grew up in Kitse- las, going to the elemen- tary school there under the instruction of school tea- cher Miss Bailey (Timms). In 1957, a lot of homes were burnt down due to a big fire. Maud’s mother decided ISABELLE MCKEE (back) and her yaunger sister Maud Bevan grew up in Old Kitselas. to move the children into Terrace so they could con- tinue with their schooling. Maud later moved to Prince Rupert to finish her education, and then she joined the work force. It was while she lived in Prince Rupert that she was the largel of a vicious domestic dispute. She was assaulted by her husband, The incident left her in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Maud eventually moved to Vancouver, where she could be near the medical treatment she required for years afterwards. The Maud Bevan House opened in Prince Rupert on March & 1981, after three years of work by local feminist groups. The facility, which has since undergone several name changes, was a shel- ter for battered wornen. It was a refuge where they could escape the bru- talities of abusive relation- ships. While she was here in the summer, Maud told me she always looks forward to returning back home to Terrace and Kitselas to visit her family and friends. It’s always a real plea- sure to spend a couple of hours with Maud and her sister Isabelle, both very beautiful ladies.
