With an ambulance en route, Russell asked Ha- worth ta stand by in case “The ambulance atten- dant confirmed that the helicopter should stay and if it was required one of the attendants would ac- campany the patient in the helicopter and that’s what happened,” Russell said. As it lurns out many of Quantum’s helicopter are | equipped with an ambu- lance kit, Haworth said. That means the doors the stretcher, Haworth said. The air lift took just 12 minutes from Shames Mountain - roughly a 40- minute drive ~ to Mills Memorial Hospital. A second coincidence occurred once Mayenburg reached Mills, said B.C. Ambulance Service spokesman Bob Pearce. “We had a fixed air ambulance in the Terrace area and were able to lake the patient to Vancouver fairly quickly.” The initial ambulance call came in at 2:41 p.m. and Mayenburg was at Vancouver General by 8:20 p.m. “It happened much quicker than it would have if we had to bring an air- craft in from Vancouver of Prince George,” Pearce ' said, Mayenburg suffered a serious head injury and is in stable condition at Van- couver General Hospital. Hospital officials were not at liberty to divulge further details of her injury. Gordon Russell says he’s very prateful to Quan- tum Helicopters for help- -ing get Mayenburg to the hospilal so quickly, “We are all pulling for her and wish her a speedy recovery,” Russell said. The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 27, 2002 - A3 News In Brief Health minister visits HEALTH SERVICES minister Colin Hansen visits Terrace and Kitimal tomorrow. He'll tour Mills Memorial Hospital, talk with hospital employees there, speak at a Terrace and District Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Coast Inn of the West and tour the new hospital and health centre in Kitimat. Hansen's been the focus of doctor criticisms since his government wiped out an arbitration award granting fee increases and province-wide on- call payments in favour of legislation which while il does give a fee increase, leaves a large number of monetary items unresolved. Air tax petition presented A PETITION containing more than 500 names pro- testing the federal government’s new $12 one-way air travel security tax was tabled in the House of Commons March 21. The petition was organized by Hawkair and was presented by Skeena Alliance MP Andy Burton. The tax is effective April 1 and is meant to pay for security measures brought in after the terrorism attacks of Sept. 11. But it applies to all air travel regardless of distance and it's regarded by Haw- kair, which flies from Terrace, Smithers and Prince Rupert ta Vancouver, as an extra expense its pas- sengers can ill afford. The petition was forwarded to federal transporta- tion minister David Collenette. Hospitals on alert HOSPITALS FROM around the northwest will be home to people from Kitimat needing medical care during the move into thal city’s new facility. Prince Rupert General in Prince Rupert and Wrinch Memorial in Hazelton will take in non- emergency cases during the move from the ald Ki- timat General Hospital to the new Kitimat General Hospital and Health Centre April 5-12. Emergency cases which can’t be dealt with in Kitimat will be transferred to Mills Memorial here up to the best of its ability to accept them, says Cholly Boland, the man in charge of health care for Terrace and Kitimat. Boland isn’t anticipating that a lot of Kitimat re- sidents will have to go elsewhere. Elective surgery cases make up the majority of patients and these procedures won’t be scheduled during the moving period, he said. Mayenburg needed a me- renee yeh Hinshaw 2001 J.D POWER?
