CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag Patient did get the right care for the injury Dear Sir: This is concerning a recent news story involving a pe- diatric patient who received services from the emer- gency department at Mills Memorial Hospital and speci- alty services ‘from the’Kitimat General Hospital, ~~ ~*~ on the specific details of the situation. However, many aspects of the story as presented by BCTV are absolutely false. This episode did not involve government cutbacks, crowded emergency rooms, send- ing patients away without treatment or the availability of orthopedic services, In this situation, the physician, the emergency room nurses and the orthopedic-surgeon all acted properly to ensure the best care for the patient. If the same situation occurred again, all treatment would be provided in the same’ manner. We strive to ensure that cur patients understand’ all that has been done to care for them and the exact nature of any additional care that may bé required. © When a patient comes to us, we ensure he or she re- ceives proper, timely treatment. We do not turn people away. We do not make patients wait for hours without needed treatment or suffer pain when we can help them. We are fortunate to have some specialty services available locally, but we are also part of a province- wide referral network. If a patient has an urgent need for specialty services, such as orthopedics, the patient will be transported to wherever that. specialist is available. If a patient does not have an immediate need for a specialist, that infor- mation will be communicated and appropriate arrange- ments will be made. As a health care organization, we are, first and fore- most, committed to providing effective health care to the people of our region. We are also receptive to pa- tient comments and suggestions for improvement. If anyone has questions about health care and would like to make suggestions, please contact me. If the authorities invalved should con- sider these insane activities to be of: a lesser evil than those-committed on New York, then their madness i is no less preva- lent. With some difficulty we try to ‘compre: hend the -utter and historically unprece- dented cowardice with which modern mi- litary forces do their thing, They will wage and create war and then strive to avoid combat; they will rain bombs and missiles on people from-many miles: away. and: at a very safe distance.
